ESPN.com reports Washington Redskins running backs coach Stump Mitchell has accepted the head coaching position at Southern University.

Perryn Keys, of The Advocate, reports Washington Redskins running backs coach Stump Mitchell has received an offer to become Southern University's next head coach, but Mitchell cannot technically accept the job yet. Mitchell said, "You can tell the (SU System) Board of Supervisors that I will see them Wednesday (Jan. 13). I will be in Baton Rouge (La.) on Wednesday." Mitchell said he must still meet with the Redskins' team management for an exit interview. Mitchell said he will meet with head coach Mike Shanahan Monday, Jan. 11, and that he is not looking for another job as an NFL assistant.

The Associated Press reports the Washington Redskins signed Stump Mitchell as the team's assistant head coach and running backs coach Wednesday, Feb. 13. Mitchell was the Seattle Seahawks running backs coach since 1999. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Frank Hughes, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks running backs coach Stump Mitchell left the team Friday, Nov. 16, because of a severe illness in his family in Georgia. Former Seahawks FB Mack Strong replaced Mitchell during practice Friday.

Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports the Seattle Seahawks have re-signed running backs coach Stump Mitchell through the 2008 season, according to Mitchell's agent, Harold Lewis.
