Chargers | Chargers lacking running game

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 13:55:56 -0700

The San Diego Chargers ran just 20 times for 42 yards in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars for a measly 2.1 yards per carry. After four games this year, they are the second-worst running team in the league, and they host the New York Jets, the stingiest run defense, in Week 5. "The big thing is the running game. It's nowhere where it needs to be," head coach Mike McCoy said. "There's no excuses about it. We're not running it well enough. We're not blocking well enough. Whatever we're running isn't working. We've got to figure out as coaches and players how to get it done." RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is out indefinitely and RB Danny Woodhead (leg) is out for the season.

Fantasy Tip: Against a weak Jags defense, Brown was a popular play at FantasyScore last week, and he disappointed. Both Brown ($5,300; 10.6% of cap) and Branden Oliver ($3,000) aren't great options against the strong defensive front of the Jets.

Chargers | More on Keenan Allen

Tue, 13 Aug 2013 12:37:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen (knee) left practice to get treatment on a posterior cruciate ligament injury that Allen suffered in 2012, according to head coach Mike McCoy. McCoy said the team wants to stay on top of the issue.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like the team is just being cautious with Allen, but it is still something to keep an eye on, especially after Allen got more reps with the starters earlier in the week.

Thu, 25 Jul 2013 19:26:54 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said he would like to name the starting offensive line as quickly as possible to let the players build some chemistry. "The sooner you can declare who your starters are, the better, especially up front on the offensive line," McCoy said. "I strongly believe those guys need to play as much together as possible. ... We're going to move guys around and decide which combination is the five best. Ideally, you wish you could say that tomorrow morning: 'These are the five." I can't say that. We're going to let that play itself out."

Chargers | Mike McCoy talks about schemes

Tue, 02 Apr 2013 14:24:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said that in a lot of cases, schemes can be a bit overrated, and suggested his team will build the offense around what their players do best. "We'll find out what the guys up front block best, what do the running backs run best, keep the tight ends involved in that running scheme, with the receivers blocking outside," he said. "We're not going to lock ourselves into saying, 'Hey, this is the only types of run we're going to have.' We're going to say, 'Hey, this is what we want to do,' and then we'll figure out, by the time the opener comes around, what our players do best.' "
