Tue, 16 Apr 2013 13:43:14 -0700 The Chicago Cubs claimed 3B Cody Ransom off waivers from the San Diego Padres Tuesday, April 16, and designated RP Hisanori Takahashi and INF/OF Brent Lillibridge for assignment to make room for RPs Kevin Gregg and Kameron Loe. Fantasy Tip: The Cubs bullpen is now basically down to three closing options after Takahashi was cut: Shawn Camp, James Russell and Carlos Marmol. Right now, Dale Sveum is using some sort of committee between Camp and Russell, but it's conceivable that Marmol could earn the job back if he performs well in less stressful situation. Grab Marmol if you're desperate and willing to live with what could be another roller coaster ride if he pitches in the ninth again.

Sat, 30 Mar 2013 16:51:18 -0700 Chicago Cubs 2B Darwin Barney (knee) will not be able to play Monday, April 1, because he suffered a deep cut on his knee that needed five stitches. Barney may have to go on the 15-day disabled list if the doctors do not think the cut can heal while he plays. OF Brent Lillibridge likely will start at second base on opening day. Fantasy Tip: Owners will have to monitor the situation over the next day to see if Barney only misses a few days or needs to be placed on the disabled list. Lillibridge and 3B Luis Valbuena could fill in at second base if Barney misses time but both likely would only be short-term options in National League-only leagues.
Tue, 19 Mar 2013 13:19:07 -0700 Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart's (quadriceps) MRI exam showed fluid in his left quadriceps Tuesday, March 19, and he'll open the season on the disabled list. Stewart is still experiencing pain in his muscle. 3B Luis Valbuena and INF Brent Lillibridge may form some sort of a platoon at third base to open the season. INFs Edwin Maysonet and Alberto Gonzalez are fighting for a utility spot on the roster. Fantasy Tip: Stewart hasn't been able to avoid nagging injuries for most of his career. Valbuena should be seen as the front-runner for the majority of PT at the hot corner, especially with the way he's played this spring. Josh Vitters (quadriceps) is dealing with injuries, too, and he might be ticketed for the minors.

INFs Javier Baez, Edwin Maysonet, Brent Lillibridge and Alberto Gonzalez figure to see time at shortstop in Castro's absence. Fantasy Tip: There is still plenty of time left in spring training, so Chicago has no reason to rush Castro back. If for some reason this injury becomes a lingering issue, Lillibridge is the likeliest candidate to start the year as the starting shortstop.
