Pirates | Francisco Cervelli sitting vs. Milwaukee

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 13:49:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli is not in the starting lineup Thursday, July 21. Pirates C Eric Fryer is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli is a fringe starting catcher in shallow leagues, but in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and NL-only settings, he's worth rolling with. Fryer is a potential low-priced flier in daily contests Thursday, but he's an afterthought in seasonal leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli back in lineup

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 13:09:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (wrist) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, July 19, and is batting sixth in the lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Junior Guerra. The team also designated C Erik Kratz for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli should receive most of the starts at catcher as long as he can stay healthy. He is hitting .257 with 21 RBI this season and should be a decent starting option in two-catcher leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli has solid rehab game

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 05:11:11 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (wrist) had a single and a double in his rehab game for Class AAA Indianapolis Friday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli likely will play in a few more rehab games and should return to the Pirates in the near future. He will receive most of the starts when he returns and should be an attractive option in two-catcher leagues and some deeper mixed leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli working out

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 16:32:17 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) is taking soft toss and hitting off a tee at "50%". "I need more strength in my had but every day I feel better," Cervelli said.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli was initially expected to miss four to six weeks with his injury. He was hitting .257/.373/.293 with no home runs and 21 RBI before his injury, so he's only a viable stash in two-catcher and NL-only leagues. Cervelli doesn't possess much power but makes consistent contact and can boost your team's average.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli has stiches removed

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 21:46:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) had his stitches removed from his left hand Saturday, June 25, and he did some light work behind the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli is still a few weeks away from returning, but he is worth hanging on to in NL-only formats and two-catcher leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli in cast

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 11:47:42 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) is wearing a soft cast and said he'll likely have his stitches removed Monday, June 20. He received treatment Friday, June 17, and went through his first cardio workout at Wrigley Field. "They're going to get me back really quick," Cervelli said. "Right now, I've got to stay focused on getting healthy so I can help my team."

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli was expected to miss four to six weeks after he had the hamate bone in his hand removed. He's been a bit of a disappointment with a .257 average and no home runs after hitting .295 with seven dingers in 2015, but he still has plenty of value in two-catcher and NL-only leagues. Keep him stashed in those formats.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli headed to DL

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 12:41:13 -0700

Updating a previous story, Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) was placed on the 15-day disabled list after undergoing surgery on his broken hamate bone on his left hand on Saturday, June 11. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: The Pirates will turn to Chris Stewart as their main catcher in Cervelli's absence and pulled off a trade Saturday with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire Erik Kratz in an attempt to fortify their depth at the position. Stewart is batting .212 in limited action this season and is unlikely to be useful in fantasy outside of NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli expected to miss time

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 11:58:11 -0700

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli's (hand) left hand injury will not be season-ending, although he is expected to be sidelined for a while.

Fantasy Tip: Chris Stewart will take over as the Pirates' primary catcher in Cervelli's absence but isn't worth adding outside of NL-only and two-catcher fantasy leagues. He is batting just .212 with a home run and six RBI in 66 at-bats this season. Check back occasionally for updates on Cervelli's status.
