Mets | Tyler Clippard to work as setup man

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 17:44:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets RP Tyler Clippard is expected to work as a setup man for CL Jeurys Familia, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard was acquired from the Oakland Athletics Monday, but he is not expected to close in Queens like he was previously doing in Oakland. His fantasy value in standard leagues takes a hit as a result, although he is a solid addition in NL-only rotisserie formats for help in the ERA and WHIP categories. He can also be a boon to fantasy owners in leagues which offer holds as a category.

Mets | Jeurys Familia sticking as closer

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:51:12 -0700

New York Mets RP Jeurys Familia will remain as the team's closer after the acquisition of RP Tyler Clippard from the Oakland Athletics Monday, July 27, according to a source. Clippard will serve as the setup man.

Fantasy Tip: Despite blowing his first two save chances in the second half, Familia still owns a 1.70 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 27 saves this year, so he's earned plenty of rope in the Mets bullpen. Clippard obviously will lose significant value with this move, but he still has value to his owners in deeper leagues in a setup role, and he could see the occasional save chance, especially if Familia continues to struggle in the second half.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard traded away

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:26:02 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard was traded to the New York Mets Monday, July 27, in exchange for P Casey Meisner.

Fantasy Tip: With Clippard out of the picture in Oakland, Edward Mujica is the speculative favorite to pitch the ninth inning, but Drew Pomeranz could also be in the mix if he's moved back to a relief role. Fernando Rodriguez probably has the best skill set to pitch the ninth, but it's unclear if he'll be in the mix. Mujica has the experience over the others, but the A's could also use a committee approach from here on out. Target Mujica first if you're looking for saves, but expect this situation to be quite messy for fantasy owners.

Mets | Tyler Clippard acquired by Mets

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:22:53 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard was acquired by the New York Mets Monday, July 27, in exchange for P Casey Meisner.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how the bullpen roles will be affected by the acquisition of Clippard, who was closing for the A's. Jeurys Familia was lights out in the first half of the season but has blown both of his save chances since the All-Star break, leaving this situation a bit unsettled. Clippard is likely to serve in some sort of setup role, but he could also see save chances, especially if Familia continues his slump. Hold onto Clippard for now in all leagues. If anything, this hurts the chances of Bobby Parnell and Jenrry Mejia securing more prominent roles at the back end.

Mets | Tyler Clippard being eyed by Mets

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 10:13:29 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard is being pursued by the New York Mets, and the two sides have made progress in trade talks, according to sources. Other teams have expressed interest in Clippard.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard has been closing games for the Athletics and has recorded 17 saves to this point. It is not known what his role would be if he was traded to the Mets, so owners should monitor the situation. Jeurys Familia has performed well as the closer for the Mets but has blown two saves in his last four appearances, which could give Clippard a chance to close if he joins the team.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard likely on the move

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 05:23:25 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard is likely the next A's player to be traded before the deadline. RP Drew Pomeranz is a candidate to become the closer if Clippard is dealt.

Fantasy Tip: Pick up Pomeranz in anticipation of Clippard's deal. Clippard may lose most of his fantasy value because he'll probably land on a team as a setup man.

Athletics | Extended outing for Tyler Clippard

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 19:46:08 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard recorded a four-out save against the Colorado Rockies Wednesday, July 1, striking out two and allowing no one to reach base.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard has recorded more than three outs in three of his last four saves, and the Athletics appear to have plenty of confidence in him. With Sean Doolittle still more than a month away, Clippard looks like a safe bet to hold down the closer's job for the remainder of the season.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard records save Thursday

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 15:18:38 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard worked a perfect ninth inning against the Texas Rangers for his 13th save in 15 chances Thursday, June 25. He hadn't pitched since Sunday, June 21, due to a heavy workload over the weekend. He was the first A's reliever since 1996 with saves of three or more outs on consecutive days over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard doesn't have any challengers for the closer role in Oakland at the moment. However, he could become trade bait this summer, leaving either Evan Scribner or Drew Pomeranz in line to take over the ninth-inning role. Sean Doolittle remains on the DL and has no timetable for a return. Drop Doolittle in shallow mixed leagues if you no longer have the room.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard should be available Wednesday

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 15:10:33 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard is expected to be available to pitch in a closing situation Wednesday, June 24, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard was unavailable for a save situation last night after having a heavy workload over the weekend. As a result, Drew Pomeranz recorded the save against the Texas Rangers. Clippard will remain the team's closer for the foreseeable future with Sean Doolittle still on the DL and with no timetable for his return in sight.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard could be unavailable

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 15:18:58 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard may not be available to close Tuesday, June 23, after throwing 62 total pitches over the weekend. Manager Bob Melvin is waiting to see how Clippard feels before the game Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: If Clippard is shut down tonight, Evan Scribner is the obvious candidate to come in for a save chance against the Texas Rangers. Don't add Scribner just for the chance that he records a save tonight, however, his excellent numbers in relief make him attractive to a fantasy pitching staff in deeper leagues.
