Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson said he would like the team's backfield to help provide a more balanced offense in 2012. "I don't mind blocking for our running backs, seeing those guys shine," Johnson said. "I want to get our running game strong and get some extra guys in the box. That helps (receivers) on the outside."

If the Detroit Lions ends up using the franchise tag on DL Cliff Avril, it will have a price tag of $10.6 million. Between Avril, WR Calvin Johnson, QB Matthew Stafford and DL Ndamukong Suh, the four players would cost up to $61.624, according to league sources with knowledge of the situation.

That figure comes from a $14 million base salary, a $4.5 million roster bonus due March 14, and slightly more than $2.5 million in allocations from past bonuses payments. A new contract could dramatically reduce the cap number, while also giving Johnson a significant chunk of money right now.

Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said he doesn't anticipate the team making aggressive free-agent moves this offseason. The team is still trying to work out deals with DL Cliff Avril, OT Jeff Backus (biceps), LB Stephen Tulloch, CB Eric Wright and WR Calvin Johnson. Backus is reportedly recovering well from biceps surgery and is expected to be ready for training camp.

Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said the team has had positive negotiations with WR Calvin Johnson over a contract extension. "(Johnson's) got a good relationship with Matthew (Stafford)," Lewand said. "There's a desire to keep that (relationship) together. When that desire exists, you can get deals done."
