Russell said in an interview he didn't get support from his teammates or former head coach Tom Cable. Jackson said he was told by Russell of the sleep apnea and "some of the things he'd gone through, but that's not the reason he's not here. I think there were several other factors, things that we don't need to get into."

The grievance is based on the contention by the team that the contract was changed at one point during his three-year stint with the Raiders and that he is not allowed to keep all of the money he collected prior to being released May 7. Part of Russell's guaranteed $32 million was originally in the form of salary advances for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 season. A portion of those salaries is in question, according to the grievance.
