Jim Trotter reports in the San Diego Union-Tribune that Chargers coach Mike Riley's biggest concern over Ryan Leaf skipping the first week of the team's summer school is the damage it could do to Leaf's relationship with his teammates. He had been doing a good job this off-season of regaining the player's respect by attending the team's off-season workouts. Missing now sends a bad message to his teammates, according to Riley. "That's not good for Ryan. We'll have to figure out the best way for him to approach it. He's going to have to deal with it. It was his choice to do these other things. These are voluntary sessions, so you can make that choice; there's nothing we can do about it." "But for him, considering the history and where he is in his career, there's a lot of older, veteran guys that have traveled across the country, from Atlanta and other places, who have been in the league a number of years and probably can't quite see why he isn't here." The coach acknowledged that two Chargers, LB Junior Seau and C David Binn were playing in the same golf tournament as Leaf but he says they advised him in advance and that those players have proven track records and don't need the practice time that Leaf requires. "I think we had practice yesterday and today and tomorrow . . . but we have a summer school next week, too, and I'll be back for that," Leaf told The Associated Press. Riley added more comments which clearly pointed out that Leaf is under a close watch, both with the players and the coaching staff.
