Blue Jays | Several candidates for No. 5 rotation spot

Tue, 17 Apr 2012 16:46:47 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SPs Joel Carreno, Drew Hutchison, Jesse Chavez and Brett Cecil are candidates to be recalled and make the start as the fifth starter against the Kansas City Royals Saturday, April 21. Carreno is scheduled to start with Triple-A Las Vegas Wednesday, April 18, so he will be ruled out if he makes that outing. P Aaron Laffey is an unlikely candidate because he was optioned last Friday.

Blue Jays | Aaron Laffey struggles

Sun, 25 Mar 2012 21:22:02 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays P Aaron Laffey allowed five runs in his spring appearance Sunday, March 25. It's bad news for Laffey, who is competing for the fifth starter job. He threw 50 of 75 pitches for strikes, and didn't walk a batter, but he also allowed nine hits. "I definitely wasn't as crisp today," Laffey said. "It just seemed like every time I missed a spot today, it was getting hammered, I was flying around and watching it hit off the wall."

Blue Jays | Dustin McGowan will be re-evaluated Monday

Sun, 25 Mar 2012 21:21:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, Toronto Blue Jays SP Dustin McGowan (foot) will be re-evaluated Monday, March 26. The team is optimistic that McGowan's plantar fasciitis problem is not going to be long term. McGowan appeared to be the clear-cut favorite for the fifth starter job, but Ps Kyle Drabek or Aaron Laffey might be used in the role if McGowan cannot go.

Blue Jays | Manager pleased with Dustin McGowan

Tue, 06 Mar 2012 18:02:55 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell said Tuesday, March 6, that he was pleased with the SP Dustin McGowan's (shoulder) performance in a simulated game. "(He) threw the ball very well," Farrell said. "He was probably in the low 90s (mph) - I didn't see it personally - but (pitching coach Bruce Walton) talked very good about the action of the stuff down in the zone. The shape and sharpness to his slide was there." McGowan is expected to open as the team's No. 5 starter, with Ps Kyle Drabek and Aaron Laffey challenging him for the spot in camp.

Blue Jays | Aaron Laffey will accept any role

Sun, 04 Mar 2012 19:56:18 -0800

Toronto Blue Jays SP Aaron Laffey worked a 1-2-3 first inning Sunday, March 4, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He ended up allowing one earned run and three hits with three strikeouts in two innings. Laffey figures he has a good shot at winning a rotation spot, but he said he would be willing to take a bullpen job if it keeps him from going to Triple-A Las Vegas. "It's all about being here in the big leagues," Laffey said. "I feel like I'm a big league pitcher with big league stuff. I think I've proven I can be consistent at this level."
