The San Jose Mercury News reports San Francisco 49ers KR/WR Vinny Sutherland is serving a 30-day jail sentence in Santa Clara County Jail after voluntarily changing the weekend work forlough arrangement agreed to at his sentencing in October. Sutherland was convicted Oct. 7 of three misdemeanor counts from a May 18 drunken-driving arrest. He chose to change his penalty so that he could get back to a normal work schedule quicker. He has been in jail since Jan. 22.

Sutherland crashed his vehicle into two light posts and a tree.

GM Terry Donahue said the team is very thankful no one was seriously injured. He said the team has been in contact with the Santa Clara County Sheriff Department and Sutherland will be charged with an undisclosed crime.

He has struggled on kickoff and punt returns, and last week he signaled for a fair catch against the Carolina Panthers and still ran with the ball. Coach Steve Mariucci said Sutherland is all the team has to do the job so no changes are planned.

With the recent addition of Tony Martin, the Falcons have three established veterans in Martin, Terance Mathis and Shawn Jefferson. There may be only one or two roster slots for the younger WRs, as Jammi German, Eugene Baker and Brian Finneran will all be in a battle. Rookies Vinny Sutherland and Quentin McCord will also have to step up come training camp to make sure they make the team.

Dan Levak reports for AtlantaFalcons.com that Atlanta Falcons rookie TE Alge Crumpler rarely dropped a pass over the weekend during mini-camp. He also appeared to be very comfortable running all of the routes the team asked him to do. LB Matt Stewart looked good over the weekend and was all over the field during Saturday's work. He snagged an acrobatic interception off a QB Michael Vick throw. WR Vinny Sutherland showed he's able to run disciplined routes and displayed a nice pair of hands. He also appears to have that extra gear to kick into a faster speed, which could help down the road on special teams work.
