The Dallas Cowboys used their franchise tag on DE Anthony Spencer this offseason and plan to sign him to a contract extension. Spencer feels he is worth at least $8 million per year and as much as the $13.2 million per year average deal Green Bay Packers LB Clay Matthews recently signed. Dallas says the market has caused the going price for players similar to Spencer to fall to roughly $5 million per year.
The Cowboys are pointing to recent contracts signed by Seattle Seahawks DEs Cliff Avril (two-year, $13 million) and Michael Bennett (one-year, $4.8 million), as well as DE/OLB Elvis Dumervil's contract with the Baltimore Ravens that will pay him approximately $5 million per season. Spencer's camp calls these deals anomalies, so it appears the deal talks have taken a downturn.
