The Dallas Cowboys are negotiating with DE Anthony Spencer on a multi-year contract extension. The team would create some salary cap space if they are able to sign Spencer to an extension.

The Dallas Cowboys said they would be OK with LB Anthony Spencer playing under the franchise tag they assigned him, even though they would like to get a deal done with Spencer. "We can go either way," Stephen Jones said. "We would always like to lock up a really good football player, always like that. I think Anthony still got several years to play. So we like to have him."

Dallas Cowboys vice-president Stephen Jones said the free agent market has played in the teams favor when it comes to signing LB Anthony Spencer to a long term contract. Jones also said that it is not fair to get into the how that market affects a certain player. "Obviously, whatever happens in the markets affects others," Jones said. "You have to look at those things. But to say how it effects him and get into the details, that's unfair."

Jordan Woy, agent for Dallas Cowboys franchise free-agent LB Anthony Spencer, said Spencer has accepted the franchise tag and will make $10.6 million in 2013. The two sides will continue to work on a long-term extension.

Dallas Cowboys franchise free-agent LB Anthony Spencer received the linebacker franchise tag tender even though he is expected to be a defensive end next season because he played a majority of his snaps at linebacker in 2012. Jordan Woy, agent for Spencer, said the team has the right to give Spencer the linebacker tender but that Spencer will look for defensive end money when they negotiate a long-term contract.
