Mon, 07 May 2012 15:13:41 -0700 Boston Red Sox Clay Buchholz is unsure of the reasons for his terrible performance to begin the season. Former SP Jim Palmer seems to think the biggest problem for Buchholz is his lack of command. "I don't see the same consistent velocity, the same consistent command," Palmer said. "The velocity is what makes his secondary stuff better. Is it health? I don't know. He could be throwing more cutters. He's not struggling with his control, but he's wild in the (strike) zone. His stuff is short right now, at least the consistency of it." Buchholz continues to say he's not suffering from health problems related to his back surgery last summer.
Sun, 06 May 2012 23:18:41 -0700 Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz lasted just 3 2/3 innings Sunday, May 6, giving up three home runs and five runs against the Baltimore Orioles. One start into May, and Buchholz has a 9.09 ERA. "It's gotta change," he said. "I don't think there's anyone in the history of baseball who's gone through a whole season giving up five runs every start."

Thu, 26 Apr 2012 14:55:51 -0700 Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz basically abandoned his changeup in his last outing against the Minnesota Twins after the pitch had been devastating for him in spring training. He only threw around five changeups out of his 107 pitches. Buchholz has given up at least five earned runs in each of his four starts this year. "My changeup has always been a pitch I've been able to throw 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, and I don't have that confidence in it right now to go out there and throw it like I have in the past," Buchholz said. "That's what I've been working on the past couple of weeks — trying to get a feel for it and, hopefully, being able to have that pitch in the bag where you can be behind in the count and throw it."

"Good stuff. I think he can work quicker and be more effective. And we talked about it, and he said it too," McClure said. Buchholz felt good when he sped up his delivery and felt that his mechanics were sound.
