Red Sox | Clay Buchholz should be ready

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 12:14:30 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) had a healthy offseason and should be ready for the start of spring training.

Fantasy Tip: The 31-year-old right-hander is obviously an injury risk, but there's hope that he can rebound yet again after he was on an impressive run before his injury in 2015. If he can avoid injury, he can be an excellent value pick late in mixed league drafts.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz's option picked up

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 09:48:51 -0800

The Boston Red Sox exercised SP Clay Buchholz's $13 million option for the 2016 season, as expected. However, he could still be traded.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz was shut down with elbow issues in August and finished the season on the disabled list. That won't endear him to many fantasy owners heading into 2016, even though he has the skills to be valuable for fantasy rotations when he's healthy. He's a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz tosses bullpen session

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 12:39:37 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) threw his first bullpen session since early July on Friday, September 25.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2015 season, but his 2016 team option hangs in the balance. General manager Dave Dombrowski said the team would pick up the option on Buchholz's contract, if he is healthy. Only in cavernous keeper/dynasty formats should owners hold onto Buchholz.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz shut down

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 18:06:54 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have officially shut down SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) for the remainder of the 2015 season. General manager Dave Dombrowski said if he's healthy, the team will pick up the 2016 option on his contract.

Fantasy Tip: During a recent visit to Dr. James Andrews, Buchholz ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) was given a platelet-rich plasma injection and advised not to undergo surgery. The hope is that he will be completely healthy by the time spring training rolls around. Buchholz went 7-7 with a 3.26 ERA in 18 starts this season and can now be safely dropped in redraft leagues.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz has a throwing timeline

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 16:21:09 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) will begin throwing Monday, Aug. 31, when the team's current road trip ends and will be examined Wednesday, Sept. 2. There is a strong possibility he will not make another start this season.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz should be viewed as a desperation stash at this stage of the season, and in most leagues, you'll be able to better utilize his roster spot. At best, he returns for a late-season start or two, and there is no guarantee he'll pitch well if he makes it back, either.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz's season is in jeopardy

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 13:45:24 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) has not began a throwing program yet, and the team is unsure if he will return to pitch before the regular season ends.

Fantasy Tip: At best, Buchholz returns for a start or two in late September, and that is if everything goes according to plan. Fantasy owners in the majority of formats can replace Buchholz without worry, as the quality of production he'll return is unknown, if he is even able to start at all.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz could return this season

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 17:07:09 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) received a positive report from Dr. James Andrews Wednesday, Aug. 12. He believes he will resume pitching before the end of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Based on this good news, seasonal owners should stash Buchholz ($7,300, 14.6% of cap) if they can afford the roster space. FantasyScore owners should avoid using him in his first start back to insure that he is both healthy and effective.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz to visit doctor

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 11:47:53 -0700

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz estimates timeline

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 14:09:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) expects it to be five to six weeks before he throws off a mound.

Fantasy Tip: Best-case scenario, Buchholz returns for a start or two at the end of the year, and that is if everything goes according to plan. Fantasy owners in the majority of formats can replace Buchholz without worry. Plus, there is no telling the quality of production Buchholz will return if he is able to rejoin the rotation this season.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz shut down again

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 15:18:24 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow and will not continue his throwing program. Manager John Farrell said Buchholz's season is not over, though.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz's fantasy impact through the rest of the season is likely minimal, as there is a chance he is unable to return at all. Fantasy owners can stash him, but it also isn't out of the question to move on if you need the bench slot. Check back for updates on his progress and for what the Red Sox do with their rotation.
