Red Sox | Clay Buchholz still looking for first win

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 19:55:00 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (0-3) allowed five runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 28, with four walks and two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has allowed exactly five runs in four of his first five starts this year and is too inconsistent to be viewed as a viable pitching option in daily fantasy contests.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz gets on track

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 14:40:32 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz produced his first good outing of the year Monday, April 18, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite picking up a no-decision, Buchholz registered 6 2/3 shutout innings, issuing six hits, two walks and striking out two.

Fantasy Tip: The 31-year-old had a 10.00 ERA coming into today's assignment, so this is certainly a positive development, especially since it came against arguably the most dangerous offense in the league. Buchholz has taken fantasy owners through a lot of valleys of ups and downs over the years, but based on this performance, it looks like a string of quality pitching could be coming.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz not good early on

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 11:21:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz is 14-13 with a 4.82 ERA during his debut stretch in April in his career. He allowed five earned runs in just four innings in his season debut against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, April 6.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has all the tools to put up a solid season, but he continues to be one of the most frustrating fantasy pitchers to own because of his inconsistency. Leave him to the waiver wire in standard mixed leagues for now, but keep an eye on him as the season progresses.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz struggles Wednesday

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 19:21:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz allowed five runs on six hits over four innings in a no-decision against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, April 6, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz's 2015 season was cut short after just 18 starts due to an elbow injury and he looked shaky in his first outing of the new season. He is not a great fantasy option outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues due to injury concerns and an inability to show consistency from one year to the next.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz works into fifth

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 23:05:35 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz pitched into the fifth inning in a Grapefruit League spring start Monday, March 21, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed one run and five hits over 4 2/3 innings. He is expected to get two more spring starts before the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz had allowed four runs in his first 5 1/3 innings of the spring. He will be just fine for fantasy owners heading into the regular season, and he is a solid mid-rotation fantasy option in AL-only and mixed fantasy play.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz named No. 2 starter

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 12:45:06 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz will start the second game of the season against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, April 6.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz was solid through 18 starts in 2015 with a 3.26 ERA, a 2.68 FIP, a 1.21 WHIP and a 8.5 K/9. However, being limited to just 18 outings limited his fantasy value, and he has only started over 20 games three times during his career. Additionally, he has been extremely inconsistent year-to-year. Buchholz is a late-round flier in mixed leagues, and while there is upside, there are as many or more concerns. Tread carefully.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz should be ready

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 12:14:30 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) had a healthy offseason and should be ready for the start of spring training.

Fantasy Tip: The 31-year-old right-hander is obviously an injury risk, but there's hope that he can rebound yet again after he was on an impressive run before his injury in 2015. If he can avoid injury, he can be an excellent value pick late in mixed league drafts.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz's option picked up

Tue, 03 Nov 2015 09:48:51 -0800

The Boston Red Sox exercised SP Clay Buchholz's $13 million option for the 2016 season, as expected. However, he could still be traded.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz was shut down with elbow issues in August and finished the season on the disabled list. That won't endear him to many fantasy owners heading into 2016, even though he has the skills to be valuable for fantasy rotations when he's healthy. He's a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz tosses bullpen session

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 12:39:37 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) threw his first bullpen session since early July on Friday, September 25.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2015 season, but his 2016 team option hangs in the balance. General manager Dave Dombrowski said the team would pick up the option on Buchholz's contract, if he is healthy. Only in cavernous keeper/dynasty formats should owners hold onto Buchholz.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz shut down

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 18:06:54 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have officially shut down SP Clay Buchholz (elbow) for the remainder of the 2015 season. General manager Dave Dombrowski said if he's healthy, the team will pick up the 2016 option on his contract.

Fantasy Tip: During a recent visit to Dr. James Andrews, Buchholz ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) was given a platelet-rich plasma injection and advised not to undergo surgery. The hope is that he will be completely healthy by the time spring training rolls around. Buchholz went 7-7 with a 3.26 ERA in 18 starts this season and can now be safely dropped in redraft leagues.
