Red Sox | Relief win for Clay Buchholz

Sun, 29 May 2016 16:27:51 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz picked up his first win in relief since 2008, allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless inning against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz will be coming out of the bullpen for the foreseeable future with Eduardo Rodriguez set to return to the rotation. You can probably cut Buchholz loose in all formats for now.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz heading to the 'pen

Fri, 27 May 2016 14:21:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz will pitch out of the bullpen when SP Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) returns from the disabled list Tuesday, May 31.

Fantasy Tip: It has been a disastrous 10-game stretch to start the season for Buchholz, as he sits with a 6.35 ERA. He was hardly worth owning in the majority of leagues to begin with, but he should be replaced in all formats now. Sometimes, starting pitchers adapt to the bullpen quickly and become high-end relievers, but you'll want to see it before counting on it with Buchholz.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz leaving rotation?

Thu, 26 May 2016 20:21:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz could be removed from the rotation based on comments from manager John Farrell, but no decision has been made or announced.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has struggled throughout the year, and even if he remains in the rotation, he isnít worth owning.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz struggles again Thursday

Thu, 26 May 2016 19:14:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (2-5) allowed six runs on seven hits over five innings in a loss to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, May 26, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has only recorded two quality starts in 10 outings this season and has posted a 6.73 ERA in five games during the month of May, so he should be avoided in all fantasy formats. His next scheduled outing will come against the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday, May 31.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz to remain in rotation

Mon, 16 May 2016 09:06:50 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz will remain in the starting rotation after allowing five runs in the first two innings against the Houston Astros Sunday, May 15, according to manager John Farrell. Buchholz's ERA sits at 6.11 through eight starts, and he's allowed eight home runs after giving up six in 18 starts in 2015. Buchholz is also sporting the worst strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.60) in his career. He's allowed 19 runs in the first two innings of games and just 12 runs in innings three through seven.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz is on very shaky ground with both Eduardo Rodriguez and Joe Kelly nearing the end of their rehab assignments. That means Buchholz needs a good outing and quickly, or else he could be bumped to a relief role. He's always had the skills but remains too inconsistent to rely on in mixed leagues right now.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz attacks strike zone

Wed, 04 May 2016 23:09:05 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz allowed two earned runs, three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over seven innings in a win against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, May 4. He entered the game with a 6.51 ERA, and manager John Farrell said beforehand that he needed to "attack the strike zone."

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz had just one quality start over his first five outings. Perhaps this impressive road outing will be the thing to jump-start his season after a winless April.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz with terrible start

Wed, 04 May 2016 12:41:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz remains winless this year heading into his start against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, May 4. He ranks 102th in ERA (6.51), 100th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (1.46-to-1) and 99th in opponent's on-base percentage (.371). Buchholz has allowed at least five earned runs in four of his five starts. He's thrown only 48% strikes in five starts, which is down 10 percentage points from his last five starts in 2015. He's also finding more success with his cutter than his fastballs, and his two- and four-seam heaters have been hit hard 28% of the time. Lefties are also teeing off against him, with 14 hard-hit balls in 63 plate appearances. He's allowing lefties to hit .358 with a 1.045 OPS.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing is going right for Buchholz to begin the year. He's always been a frustrating fantasy commodity to own, though, so nobody should be all that surprised. With his walks up (4.2 per nine) and strikeouts down (6.2 per nine), he's not worth holding onto in mixed leagues right now. It doesn't get any easier facing the White Sox Thursday night.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz still looking for first win

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 19:55:00 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz (0-3) allowed five runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves Thursday, April 28, with four walks and two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has allowed exactly five runs in four of his first five starts this year and is too inconsistent to be viewed as a viable pitching option in daily fantasy contests.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz gets on track

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 14:40:32 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz produced his first good outing of the year Monday, April 18, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite picking up a no-decision, Buchholz registered 6 2/3 shutout innings, issuing six hits, two walks and striking out two.

Fantasy Tip: The 31-year-old had a 10.00 ERA coming into today's assignment, so this is certainly a positive development, especially since it came against arguably the most dangerous offense in the league. Buchholz has taken fantasy owners through a lot of valleys of ups and downs over the years, but based on this performance, it looks like a string of quality pitching could be coming.

Red Sox | Clay Buchholz not good early on

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 11:21:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz is 14-13 with a 4.82 ERA during his debut stretch in April in his career. He allowed five earned runs in just four innings in his season debut against the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, April 6.

Fantasy Tip: Buchholz has all the tools to put up a solid season, but he continues to be one of the most frustrating fantasy pitchers to own because of his inconsistency. Leave him to the waiver wire in standard mixed leagues for now, but keep an eye on him as the season progresses.
