Blue Jays | J.A. Happ whiffs seven in quality start

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 21:40:10 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ allowed three earned runs, six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in a no-decision Saturday, April 30, against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: Happ has posted a 1.87 ERA in 15 starts dating back to August. He is a must-start fantasy option in AL-only leagues and most mixed formats while running hot, and he is a tremendous DFS value.

Blue Jays | Another strong outing for J.A. Happ

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 13:32:46 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ was brutally efficient yet again Saturday, April 23, needing only 92 pitches over seven innings to post his third win in as many starts.

Fantasy Tip: Happ allowed a season-high three runs Saturday and is averaging only half a strikeout per inning for the season, but owners have to be pleased with his contributions in just about every other area. The 33-year-old is a strong candidate for 15 wins this season considering the offense he has supporting him. While he seems to be pitching more to contact this year, his strikeouts should pick up soon; Happ fanned at least six batters eight times in 11 starts after he was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates last July.

Blue Jays | J.A. Happ continues smooth sailing

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 14:35:18 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ turned in his third consecutive quality start to begin the season Monday, April 18, against the Boston Red Sox. He fired seven innings of one-run ball, yielding just four hits, one walk and striking out four, en route to improving to 2-0 on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Happ now has a shiny 1.89 ERA through his first three assignments and deserves serious consideration even in standard leagues. He's clearly in a groove right now -- with all of his solid pitching coming against division rivals -- and the southpaw has the best offense in baseball backing him, so the wins should continue to pour in. More likely than not, Happ will keep it up.

Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Blue Jays | J.A. Happ financial details

Sat, 28 Nov 2015 11:37:24 -0800

Updating a previous report, Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ's three-year, $36 million deal will pay him $10 million during the 2016 season and $13 million during both the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Happ was an attractive free-agent pitching option for Toronto because no qualifying offer was extended to him by the Pirates, meaning that the Jays didn't have to part with any draft picks in order to sign him. After a slow beginning to the 2015 season in Seattle, Happ went 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 11 starts for Pittsburgh. However, he might have difficulty duplicating that success in the hitter-friendly AL East during the 2016 season, so fantasy owners should avoid drafting him too early.

Blue Jays | TOR signs J.A. Happ

Fri, 27 Nov 2015 17:19:22 -0800

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free-agent SP J.A. Happ (Pirates) to a three-year deal worth $36 million.

Fantasy Tip: Happ went 11-8 with a 3.61 ERA in 32 regular-season games (31 starts) for Seattle and Pittsburgh in 2015 and was particularly impressive for the Pirates down the stretch, going 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA and 69 strikeouts over 63 1/3 innings. Happ should be viewed as an option for the back end of the rotation in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

Pirates | J.A. Happ pitches well vs. St. Louis

Sat, 05 Sep 2015 06:02:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ pitched seven scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, Sept. 4, to pick up his eight win of the season. He struck out eight batters during the game and did not walk a batter. Happ has won four of his six starts with the Pirates and has a 1.57 ERA in that span.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) has allowed two earned runs over his last five starts and has at least six strikeouts in three of those games. He is scheduled to face the Cincinnati Reds in his next start and could be a solid option on FantasyScore during his hot streak.

Pirates | J.A. Happ roughed up by Cubs

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 20:14:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six hitters through 4 1/3 innings during the Pirates' 5-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) entered his debut start with the Pirates with a 4.64 EA, a 4.07 FIP, a 1.40 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9, and he has now allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last seven starts. It is unlikely Happ turns it around enough to warrant attention in the majority of seasonal leagues, and FantasyScore players should view him as an extremely risky start.

Pirates | J.A. Happ joining rotation

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 16:22:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP J.A. Happ will join the starting rotation with A.J. Burnett (elbow) on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) should fare slightly better in the National League, but he is still nothing more than a streaming option in the majority of seasonal leagues. FantasyScore players should be extremely cautious with starting him, too. Over 20 starts this season, Happ has a 4.64 ERA, a 4.06 FIP, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9.

Mariners | Jesus Montero sent down

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 10:10:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Jesus Montero was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Monday, July 20. The team also recalled SP J.A. Happ from Class A Bakersfield.

Fantasy Tip: Montero likely will return at some point this season, but owners may want to consider dropping him in their leagues. Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) could be an option in AL-only leagues if he is available, but owners on FantasyScore may want to avoid using him against tougher opponents.
