Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers S John Keith is expected to start Sunday's game, Nov. 2, against the St. Louis Rams due to injuries to S Ronnie Heard (knee) and Zack Bronson (neck).

Updating previous reports, SportsLine.com reports the San Francisco 49ers have signed SS John Keith from the practice squad. Keith was added to give the team depth at saftey in the absence of FS Ronnie Heard (knee), who is out for a month with an MCL tear in his left knee.

As expected, the Journal Sentinel reports the Green Bay Packers visited with free agent S John Keith (49ers) on Wednesday. The Packers appeared most interested in Keith. In fact, agent Jordan Feagan said he thought Green Bay would sign his client to a modest one-year contract if he passed his physical. The Packers medical staff rejected him because of a previous knee injury.

The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers S John Keith (arm) wore a cumbersome cast on his left arm in practice Thursday. He will have a smaller cast put on his hand Friday and he said he won't spend much time worrying about the injury against the Cowboys.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci said S John Keith (broken thumb) will need surgery on his injured thumb and will be in a cast. The team is hopeful he’ll still be able to play this weekend.

Officially the San Francisco 49ers expansion list only contains four names. The fifth, unknown player, is reported to be S John Keith. The reason he is not on the list at this time is he is scheduled for further physical examination before being identified.

Cam Inman reports for the Contra Costa Times San Francisco 49ers backup S John Keith will have surgery Thursday to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, causing him to miss most, if not all, of the season. Coach Steve Mariucci said the team won't decide until after Thursday's surgery whether or not to place Keith on injured reserve. Ronnie Heard now becomes Lance Schulters' top backup at strong safety. RB/KR Jonas Lewis suffered a groin pull that likely will keep him out of Sunday's game at New Orleans and possibly longer, Mariucci said. OLB Julian Peterson (left ankle sprain) also likely won't play this week. RG Dave Fiore (shoulder), backup OT Matt Willig (right knee) and S Zack Bronson (mild knee sprain) are listed as probable for Sunday's game.

Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat the San Francisco 49ers think backup S John Keith may have sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI examination on his knee but the general feeling in the locker room was that he would be lost for a long time, if not the season. To sign a rookie replacement, the 49ers need to clear $209,000 and they are only about $165,000 under the cap. One move to free space could be to release DE Bobby Setzer, a recent acquisition, and re-sign rookie S Al Blades.

ESPN reports San Francisco 49ers RB Jonas Lewis strained his groin during today's game. He looks to be questionable for next week. S John Keith injured his left knee during the opening kickoff. He'll have an MRI on his knee ligaments on Monday, but he's listed as doubtful for next week.

Mike Triplett, of the Sacramento Bee, reports for the Sporting News that the San Francisco 49ers have a lot of depth at the safety position this year. Lance Schulters and John Keith are the projected starters at this time with Zack Bronson, Ronnie Heard and Pierson Prioleau in reserves. The 49ers may utilize Schulters, Keith and Bronson on the field all at the same time on occasion this year.

DT Junior Bryant wasn't allowed to participate because he failed to pass a physical. Bryant, suffering from a neck problem, doesn't know when he'll be allowed to return to the field.

QB Jeff Garcia, who has not yet signed his tender offer as an exclusive-rights free agent, will take part in the camp. Unsigned QB Rick Mirer will as well. S Lance Schulters (knee) and S John Keith (knee) will not be able to participate but will be in attendence.

The Contra Costa Times reports San Francisco 49ers rookie LB Julian Peterson will have surgery January 4 on his right shoulder, which he originally injured during training camp. John Keith, a rookie safety who broke his arm October 8 against the Raiders, will go under the knife January 11 to fix what coach Steve Mariucci called "an arthritic condition" in his left knee. Both are expected to be healthy by the time the 49ers reconvene for their April 28-29 mini-camp.
