Tigers | Jarrod Saltalamacchia hits walk-off HR

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 13:23:15 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Jarrod Saltalamacchia clubbed a two-run, walk-off homer off Kansas City Royals RP Joakim Soria in the ninth inning to lead his team to a 4-2 victory.

Fantasy Tip: Saltalamacchia has been virtually nonexistent in fantasy since hitting six home runs and driving in 15 runs in April. Even with his theatrics on Sunday, he only has three homers and 12 RBI since since that torrid spell while playing sporadically behind James McCann. Owners can ignore this result for now and leave them on the waiver wire, as McCann will likely return to the lineup on Monday and continue to make most of the starts.

Royals | Joakim Soria picks up the win

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 21:28:03 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Joakim Soria pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, June 14, to pick up his third win of the year.

Fantasy Tip: Soria entered in the eighth with the team down 2-1, and manager Ned Yost kept him in after the Royals grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Normally, Wade Davis would close, but as he'd worked three days straight the team elected to let Soria work the ninth. Soria is of no interest outside of leagues that count holds.

Royals | Joakim Soria struggles in save situation

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 19:30:58 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Joakim Soria (2-2) allowed two runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the Cleveland Indians Thursday, June 2. He entered the game in a save situation because RP Wade Davis was given the day off, after pitching three times in the previous four days.

Fantasy Tip: Soria is no stranger to the closer's role, having earned 24 saves last season and 203 in his career. Owners in AL-only fantasy leagues, along with anyone desperate for saves, should consider having the 32-year-old right-hander on their roster in case Davis gets injured down the line or is unavailable due to an excessive workload.

Royals | Kelvin Herrera now working eighth

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 16:52:00 -0700

Kansas City Royals RP Kelvin Herrera will replace RP Joakim Soria as the club's eighth-inning reliever, while Soria works on a mechanical issue, according to manager Ned Yost.

Fantasy Tip: Soria has been struggling for the team but at least it looks like the reason for that has been discovered. In the meantime, Herrera gets a considerable boost in leagues that score holds, as his stuff is pretty much as good as any late-inning reliever. Pitching for the defending champions, he'll have plenty of opportunities to help finish off ballgames and pick up holds for the Royals. Soria can be dropped.

Royals | Joakim Soria has mechanical issues

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 16:39:03 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Royals RP Joakim Soria and pitching coach Dave Eiland found a flaw in Soria's delivery in his front side recently, and he'll be moved out of the eighth-inning setup role while he works to fix it. Soria has allowed six earned runs and 10 hits in seven innings. His left side is drifting open too quickly, which throws off his release point. Manager Ned Yost said RP Kelvin Herrera will be deployed in the eighth inning in the meantime. Yost wants to use Herrera in the most high-leverage situations, so the roles won't be rigid. Herrera hasn't allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings over eight appearances to begin the year and has 10 strikeouts. Herrera has also been using a new slider after debuting the pitch last September and October. Despite Soria's struggles, he's inducing the weakest contact of the Royals relievers.

Fantasy Tip: That explains Soria's rough start in his reunion with the Royals. In shallower mixed leagues where Soria's owned, you may want to consider ditching him for better options. If you're compelled to hold him, bench him until things turn around. The bottom line, though, is that Herrera's stuff plays much better for fantasy owners, even if Soria will see the occasional save chance to spell Wade Davis.

Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates) agreed to a three-year, $25 million deal with the Kansas City Royals Monday, Dec. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Soria will likely set up for Wade Davis, but he'll have some value in holds leagues and near the end of traditional drafts.

Tigers | DET ends Joakim Soria pursuit

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 12:58:27 -0800

Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Tigers) is no longer being pursued by the Detroit Tigers now that Detroit has traded for RP Francisco Rodriguez.

Fantasy Tip: Apparently the Tigers no longer think Soria can get the job done or they are fairly high on K-Rod. Soria will be a decent relief option in later rounds of fantasy drafts, just so long as you know he won't be in the Motor City.

Twins | MIN looking at Joakim Soria

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 23:47:09 -0800

Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Tigers) is being looked at by the Minnesota Twins, who have looked over his medical files.

Fantasy Tip: Soria recovered enough of his mechanics to put him up for a decent, if not spectacular, payday. Among closers, look for Soria to go later in mixed drafts as there is still a chance for tremendous downside.

MLB | Joakim Soria eyeing three-year deal

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 17:35:15 -0800

Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates) is reportedly seeking a three-year deal worth approximately $27 million.

Fantasy Tip: Soria is considered to be one of the top relievers available in free agency. He went 3-1 with a 2.53 ERA and 24 saves in 70 appearances with Detroit and Pittsburgh last season. He could be a midrange closer option in fantasy baseball drafts next spring, depending on which team signs him.

Tigers | Detroit discussing Craig Kimbrel

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:54:18 -0800

The Detroit Tigers are one of about six teams apparently discussing a deal for San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel. Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates) is a name the Tigers are discussing, too. The Tigers could also look at trading for Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel had a down year in his first season in San Diego, but he remains an elite fantasy baseball closing option wherever he's pitching.
