The Kansas City Royals placed SS Yuniesky Betancourt (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle Thursday, May 3. INF Irving Falu was recalled from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. Also, RP Joakim Soria (elbow) was moved to the 60-day disabled list. Betancourt's DL stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 2.

The Kansas City Royals assigned P Sean O'Sullivan to Triple-A Omaha Wednesday, April 4, finalizing their roster. O'Sullivan is expected to start for Omaha. Ps Joakim Soria (elbow), Felipe Paulino (elbow) and Blake Wood (elbow) were put on the 15-day disabled list.

Kansas City Royals RP Joakim Soria (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out for the entire 2012 season. The surgery will take place April 3 and will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum. Soria received three opinions before deciding on surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Although Ned Yost won't tip his hand, Jonathan Broxton is expected to receive first crack at closing out games, at least to start the season. He's looked good this spring, and his velocity has returned after he underwent surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow last season. Yost is also comfortable using Greg Holland as the ninth-inning stopper, and because no closer has been named, Holland is worth adding in mixed universes in case Broxton falters. Aaron Crow is worth a speculative add as a last-pick flier in AL-only leagues after being moved back to the bullpen.

Kansas City Royals RP Joakim Soria (elbow) is having his sore right elbow examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles Tuesday, March 20. Soria said his elbow felt "really bad" after leaving his spring outing Sunday, March 18.

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost isn't ready to name a closer if RP Joakim Soria (elbow) needs season-ending surgery on his elbow. Yost named both RPs Greg Holland and Jonathan Broxton as capable of handling the role. "They both can handle it," Yost said. "We'll think through it. It wasn't a scenario I could foresee coming. So it's going to take some time to think through it. We might use them both in that spot."

The reports on Kansas City Royals RP Jonathan Broxton this spring have been positive, and he's been hitting 94-96 mph on his fastball with a good slider. Broxton is expected to fill in as the closer with RP Joakim Soria (elbow) sidelined.
