Cowboys | Dallas could use committee to replace Zeke?

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 10:04:59 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris may serve in a committee along with Darren McFadden during Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension, according to ESPN.com's Todd Archer.

Fantasy Tip: This seems unlikely given how Morris was supposedly fighting for a job less than two weeks ago, but he has shown well through two preseason games. At the very least, it appears as if he is well on his way to locking down a roster spot. Elliott owners who have already made room for McFadden may want to play it safe and try to add Morris as well, but a committee approach would likely make both players flex options at best during Dallas' grueling early schedule.

Cowboys | Dallas to use committee in backfield?

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 17:10:07 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden rushed six times for 28 yards in a 13-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason Saturday, Aug. 12, but Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com believes McFadden left some yards on the field and thinks the Cowboys could go with a committee approach while RB Ezekiel Elliott is serving his suspension.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden and Alfred Morris are the likely candidates to pick up the slack while Elliott is sidelined, but McFadden is still the more attractive option. He will have RB2 potential, especially in PPR formats. Morris should be owned in case McFadden struggles or is injured.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden misses charter

Sat, 22 Jul 2017 20:38:16 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden missed the team charter Saturday, July 22, and will have to take a commercial flight to meet up with the team.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden enters the season as the No. 2 back behind Ezekiel Elliott, and he should be scooped up as a late-round handcuff in case Elliott goes down.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden re-signs

Thu, 16 Mar 2017 11:25:17 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden re-signed to a one-year deal Thursday, March 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: The Cowboys' backfield is all about Ezekiel Elliott for at least the next 10 years, ideally. McFadden's role will be extremely limited with Elliott being given one of the biggest workloads in the NFL. McFadden is merely a late-round handicap flier at best.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden garnering interest

Thu, 02 Mar 2017 16:50:02 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden is "open to a return to the Cowboys," but he is also drawing interest from "two other teams," according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden may look to go elsewhere as an unrestricted free agent, as he proved he still has enough in the tank as recent as the 2015 season, when he registered a 1,000-yard campaign in his first year in Dallas. However, he has had difficulty staying healthy throughout his career, and at 30 years old, that issue might persist like it did this past season. McFadden is likely looking at a backup role no matter where he goes.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden leads depleted running game

Sun, 01 Jan 2017 14:00:59 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden rushed for 28 yards in his team's 27-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Jan. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Full disclosure: The Cowboys rushed for 69 yards as a team. McFadden's longest run of the day was 24 yards. Take that away and all he had was six carries for four yards. You can tell the Cowboys sat Ezekiel Elliott with nothing to play for and it showed.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden will play

Sun, 01 Jan 2017 09:33:04 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (illness) is officially active for the team's Week 17 game.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden has a decent chance to see extended playing time with Ezekiel Elliott likely to see limited snaps. Owners can consider McFadden as a flex option if they do not have other options.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden questionable

Fri, 30 Dec 2016 16:45:42 -0800

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (illness) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 30, and is listed as questionable for Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden should be in uniform against the Philadelphia Eagles and is expected to receive significant playing time since Ezekiel Elliott probably will see limited touches. Owners in most leagues should consider McFadden as a flex option.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden misses practice Friday

Fri, 30 Dec 2016 10:50:24 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (illness) is hopeful to play Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles despite dealing with an illness.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden is expected to receive the majority of the touches versus the Eagles since Dallas has nothing to play for this weekend, but his illness leaves the door open for Alfred Morris and Lance Dunbar to play a larger-than-anticipated role. It's shaping up as a situation DFS owners will want to avoid.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden may see most carries

Thu, 29 Dec 2016 12:43:13 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden likely will receive most of the snaps at running back in Week 17 since the team likely will give RB Ezekiel Elliott limited work.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden has rushed for 59 yards on 17 carries since being added to the active roster but should receive a lot of carries against the Philadelphia Eagles this week. Owners in most leagues could consider McFadden as a flex option.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden knocks off rust

Mon, 26 Dec 2016 21:45:19 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden rushed a team-high 14 times for 49 yards in the Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions Monday, Dec. 26. He was targeted once but had zero receptions.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden was allowed to knock off some rust in the second half with the team resting Ezekiel Elliott, preserving their star rookie with home-field advantage already sewn up. McFadden could see extensive playing time in Week 17 if the team elects to rest their regulars.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden activated from NFI list

Tue, 13 Dec 2016 13:43:32 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) was activated to the active roster from the Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, Dec. 13. RB Darius Jackson was subsequently released.

Fantasy Tip: This is Ezekiel Elliott's backfield and anyone playing behind him has zero to minimal fantasy value. McFadden's days of being fantasy relevant could very well be over.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden returning

Mon, 12 Dec 2016 07:55:18 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) will be moved to the 53-man roster this week, owner Jerry Jones said Monday, Dec. 12.

Fantasy Tip: With Ezekiel Elliott taking the league by storm, there isn't a big role for Run DMC. He's a stretch as a flex option in PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden activated

Mon, 21 Nov 2016 12:22:34 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) was activated from the Non-Football Injury list Monday, Nov. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Don't expect McFadden to put much of a dent in Ezekiel Elliott's fantasy value upon his return. Elliott is having a rookie season for the ages and is a weekly start, with or without McFadden.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden on the block

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 10:00:21 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) can be had via trade "should the right offer come along", according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Tip: The same could be said about most of the players in the league and has already been said about McFadden, who reportedly may not ever be able to fully straighten his right arm again due to this summer's infamous cell phone incident. McFadden is currently on the Non-Football Injury list and could be released in an injury settlement in the near future, as Dallas is sitting fine at running back with Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden unlikely to be moved

Sun, 30 Oct 2016 07:34:27 -0700

The Dallas Cowboys would need to receive a significant offer to move RB Darren McFadden before the trade deadline, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden is on the non-football injury list after sustaining a fractured elbow during the offseason, so the odds of him being moved to a contender in the next few days appear to be slim. That being said, Ezekiel Elliott has had an outstanding rookie campaign and Alfred Morris makes a solid backup, so Dallas would appear to have little use for him once he's healthy. McFadden has minimal fantasy value as long as he is with the Cowboys.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden nearing return?

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 21:34:58 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) indicated his elbow is "feeling great" and is ready to go. With the team on Bye, McFadden won't practice this week, but he could return in the lead up to Week 8. Dallas will have 21 days from the time of his first practice to activate McFadden or place him on IR.

Fantasy Tip: With Ezekiel Elliot tearing up the NFL and Alfred Morris a steady backup it's hard to see what role McFadden will play on this team going forward. There were some previous rumblings that Run DMC could be dealt, but barring that unlikely scenario his fantasy value appears to be nil for the time being.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden a trade candidate?

Tue, 11 Oct 2016 21:37:59 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) doesn't have an obvious role whenever he returns from his broken elbow, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. He's eligible to be activated Oct. 23, in advance of the NFL's Nov. 1 trade deadline, and Archer believes McFadden might draw interest from a team in need of a back.

Fantasy Tip: It's all speculation at this point, but with Ezekiel Elliot leading the NFL in rushing and Alfred Morris as a more-than-capable reserve, Run DMC looks like a luxury. If you're in a larger league or one with an IR slot, McFadden might be a tempting stash option, at least through Nov. 2.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden's arm an issue

Mon, 05 Sep 2016 13:28:26 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (arm) said he can't straighten his right arm all the way yet, and he may not be able to fully straighten it again.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden is no stranger to injuries, and he'll take a backseat to Ezekiel Elliott this year anyway even if/when he is healthy. McFadden is still draftable, but he may not be worth starting in any given week as long as Elliott is healthy and with Alfred Morris also in the mix.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden may miss first six weeks

Sat, 03 Sep 2016 12:12:35 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) is expected to start the season on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. The Cowboys received trade interest in McFadden but they intend to keep him, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: It appears like McFadden will not be able to play until around mid season, so owners probably should avoid him in their drafts. Ezekiel Elliott will receive most of the work at running back with McFadden out and should be a No. 1 running back in drafts.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden ready to return

Fri, 02 Sep 2016 09:34:16 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) said he is "definitely" ready to return to practice Thursday, Sept. 1. McFadden will miss the first six games of the season if he is not activated from the Active/Non-Football Injury list before the final roster cuts Saturday, Sept. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Dallas has a crowded running back group with Ezekiel Elliott, Alfred Morris, Darius Jackson and Lance Dunbar also in the mix. Activating McFadden before Saturday could force the Cowboys to cut Jackson or Dunbar, so with McFadden also rumored to be involved in trade negotiations, his early-season fantasy value is extremely murky. At this point, it is best to downgrade him to a late-round target. His resurgence last season (4.6 yards per carry) was also likely more influenced by the Dallas offensive line than McFadden's running abilities.

Cowboys | Teams interested in Darren McFadden

Tue, 30 Aug 2016 12:19:20 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden has drawn trade interest from multiple teams, but the Cowboys want to hold on to the running back.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, McFadden will likely play second fiddle to Ezekiel Elliott in 2016. He was one of only seven running backs to run for at least 1,000 yards last season, but his injury history and status as a backup are too much to make him more than a deep flier.

Cowboys | Two Dallas backs in pads Monday

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 15:36:30 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RBs Darren McFadden (elbow) and Lance Dunbar (knee) were in pads on the side for their rehabilitation work Monday, Aug. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Both Dunbar and McFadden would be beneficial to the Cowboys' passing game upon their return. It's not clear exactly when they will return, though, and Ezekiel Elliott remains the primary running back. Dunbar and McFadden are still worth mid- to late-round consideration, with added value in PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden not close

Wed, 10 Aug 2016 14:26:45 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) is working hard in his recovery from offseason elbow surgery but is not expected to play in the near future, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if McFadden will be ready for the start of the regular season. McFadden probably will be the primary backup running back this season and will see limited playing time. McFadden could be a late-round option in fantasy leagues as a handcuff to Ezekiel Elliott.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden designation update

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 12:35:23 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Friday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden is expected to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but missing all of training camp is concerning. It'll plant him firmly behind Ezekiel Elliott on the depth chart, and there could be very limited touches behind the first-round selection, as Elliott is expected to be a true bell-cow back. McFadden is a depth grab in the later middle rounds of drafts, and he's also nice insurance for Elliott owners.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden on track for opener

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 10:05:21 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) received positive results from his bone scan, and he's on track for the season opener.

Fantasy Tip: The injury really couldn't have come at a worse time, and the buzz now revolves around Ezekiel Elliott. Some pundits have Elliott in line for 300-plus carries, which doesn't leave a lot of scraps for McFadden. He'll be active in the passing game, though, and he's still worth taking as an RB4 in PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden eyeing preseason return

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 18:29:32 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) will have a scan on his broken elbow Monday, July 25, and he said hopes to return during the preseason.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden should be owned in all formats in case something happens to Ezekiel Elliott on the field or if Elliott's recent off-field issues turn out to have long-term ramifications. However, McFadden is a merely a RB4 candidate if Elliott is available.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden story revised

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 09:38:32 -0700

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) said he was injured in a slightly different way than the team, who said McFadden was injured trying to save his cellphone, released to the public. McFadden said his phone was in his hand, but he slipped down and fell on the elbow. He said he still has a few weeks in a brace after June 14 surgery, and it's possible he could miss the season opener.

Fantasy Tip: Ezekiel Elliott has a golden opportunity in training camp and only has Alfred Morris to stave off. Morris has very meager RB4 or RB5 value in fantasy. Elliott has drawn rave reviews, but taking him as anything more than an RB2 is a risk. McFadden seems to have the upper hand over Morris because he's a better receiver than the former Redskin, but McFadden is an RB4 in fantasy.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden hurt in home accident

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 09:33:20 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) required surgery on a broken elbow after he was injured in an accident at home. McFadden is expected to miss two months and be ready by the end of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: The stage appears to be set for Ezekiel Elliott to take the bull by the horns. Alfred Morris should return into the picture as well. McFadden trumps Morris because he's a better receiver, but one has to wonder the value of having all three on the same team. Elliott is a high-end RB3 that will probably start sneaking into RB2 territory. McFadden, if he can return in time to have something resembling a training camp, is an RB4. Morris' value is tricky with the other two in the backfield, but he's an RB5 flyer.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden undergoes surgery

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 09:20:29 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) underwent surgery on his elbow Tuesday, June 14, and is expected back in time for the season opener, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Fantasy Tip: Missing training camp could be bad for his usage. It gives rookie Ezekiel Elliott an entire camp to lead the way. He has a ton of hype already, and if he has a good camp, McFadden could be left with table scraps. The perfect-world scenario is a 50-50 split between the two, but McFadden may fall into the RB4 mix if he misses a big portion of camp.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden embracing role

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 18:33:03 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden called RB Ezekiel Elliott an "awesome runner" and said he is going to show him the ropes while still competing with Elliott for touches.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden is saying all the right things, but the Dallas backfield is going to belong to Elliott. McFadden could still be a viable RB3 in PPR formats, but his upside is severely capped with Elliott in town.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden not at practice

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 12:21:36 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (personal) was not present for organized team activities Wednesday, June 1, for personal reasons. RB Ezekiel Elliott ran with the first team in McFadden's absence, while RB Alfred Morris took snaps with the second team.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Elliott doesn't usually play with the first team, he's the running back to draft in Dallas. Elliott is the salt of the Cowboys' running back spices, while McFadden is the underwhelmingly flavored pepper and Morris is the cumin. Elliott has mid-range RB1 upside if he can stay healthy and fend off McFadden and Morris.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden could be traded

Tue, 31 May 2016 16:35:54 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden may end up as trade bait before the regular season, in the opinion of ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer.

Fantasy Tip: Trading McFadden would make sense for Dallas, who would still have Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris to carry the load in the backfield. McFadden's fantasy value took a huge hit when Elliott was drafted; he should no longer be viewed as more than a low-end RB4 to high-end RB5, with extra value in PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris not available

Thu, 26 May 2016 19:09:27 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris and RB Darren McFadden are not available for trade, executive vice president Stephen Jones said Thursday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: After selecting Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 pick in the NFL draft, the fantasy value of both McFadden and Morris takes a major hit. McFadden is worth grabbing later in drafts, but it would take an injury to Elliott for McFadden to become a starting-caliber back.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott must earn starting job

Thu, 26 May 2016 10:20:54 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott must compete to earn a starting role this year, according to running backs coach Gary Brown. Elliott was drafted fourth overall by the Cowboys and will compete with RBs Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris. "It's a lot faster pace," Elliott said. "The game moves so much faster. Yesterday, I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit shell-shocked. But today I came out. I was a little bit more prepared and was more ready mentally so it was a little bit easier for me."

Fantasy Tip: This is probably just coach speak. Dallas wouldn't have used a top-five pick on a running back if they weren't prepared to start him immediately. Elliott was the top back in the draft by a long shot, and he should contribute nicely for fantasy owners immediately behind an elite offensive line. Take Elliott as an RB2 with upside for more in 2016.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott working with second team

Wed, 25 May 2016 22:59:33 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has been working with the second-team offense during organized team activities this week. RB Darren McFadden has been working with the starting offense.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Elliott will be the starter in Week 1, but he likely will become the starter at some point during his rookie season. Elliott should be considered a No. 2 running back in most leagues because should see plenty of touches each week. McFadden should be considered a No. 3 running back since he likely will see his carries drop as the season goes on.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden still starter in Dallas

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 14:35:20 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden is still viewed as the starting running back, according to owner Jerry Jones, although Jones said newly acquired RB Alfred Morris will still have a substantive role.

Fantasy Tip: This is one of those running back committees that don't necessarily prompt you to cheer or show any positive emotion. Morris will likely be used mostly on short-yardage and goal-line carries, while McFadden should be used more in the passing game. McFadden has added value in PPR leagues and could still finish as an RB2 in PPR formats. Morris is in RB3 to RB4 territory.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden to carry load early?

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 20:47:53 -0700

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden will likely open 2016 as the starting running back and see a majority of the work on all downs, according to beat writer David Moore, but Moore added that he believes the team will also draft a back and transition them into a larger role as the year goes on.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden enjoyed a solid 2015 season once he became the lead back, and despite the injury risk, he should be viewed as a RB2 heading into next season.

Cowboys | Dallas likely to add RB in draft

Sun, 28 Feb 2016 13:20:01 -0800

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is confident the team will add a running back this offseason to work in tandem with RB Darren McFadden.

Fantasy Tip: Some are suggesting the Cowboys could even target Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott as high as No. 4 overall, but a more likely scenario has them addressing their defense and/or quarterback-in-waiting over the first two days of the draft. Either way, McFadden is highly unlikely to repeat the voluminous workload he did after supplanting Joseph Randle last season and may be no better than a flex option going forward.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden has bounce-back year

Tue, 05 Jan 2016 13:01:36 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden had his best season since 2010, totaling 1,089 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden has put together back-to-back healthy seasons, playing in all 16 games the last two years. He took advantage of his opportunity after Joseph Randle derailed. Whether or not McFadden is the boy crying wolf remains to be seen, but he should be considered a RB2 going into next season's fantasy drafts.

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden had 12 carries for 92 yards and five catches for 53 yards in a 34-23 loss to the Washington Redskins in Week 17, reaching 1,000 yards rushing for the second time in his career.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden performed well when he was finally made the starter, and if he enters next year in the same role, he should be a solid RB2 in all formats.

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 14:49:20 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden rushed for 99 yards on 19 carries against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden has been a solid addition for the Cowboys this season and should be a focal point on offense in Week 17. He has rushed for at least 99 yards in four of his last six games and could be a solid starting option against the Redskins.

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 19:17:42 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden had nine carries for 111 yards in a 28-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: The Cowboys had to abandon the run after falling behind, slowing what could have been an even bigger performance. McFadden has had several big games this year, but don't expect one next week against a solid New York Jets defense.

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 19:15:14 -0800

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (head) left the Week 13 game against the Washington Redskins in the third quarter. He suffered an apparent head injury on a carry which resulted in a fumble, and he was being checked on the sidelines before heading off to the locker room for further evaluation.

Fantasy Tip: McFadden leads the team with 35 rushing yards on nine carries while hauling in one reception for six yards. If he cannot continue it would be Robert Turbin and Rod Smith likely picking up the slack.
