The AP reports former San Francisco 49ers S Al Blades was killed early Thursday when the car he was riding in crashed into a bridge and plunged into a canal. He was just 26 years old. Blades was riding in the car when the driver lost control early Thursday. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Matt Maiocco reports for the Press Democrat the San Francisco 49ers think backup S John Keith may have sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI examination on his knee but the general feeling in the locker room was that he would be lost for a long time, if not the season. To sign a rookie replacement, the 49ers need to clear $209,000 and they are only about $165,000 under the cap. One move to free space could be to release DE Bobby Setzer, a recent acquisition, and re-sign rookie S Al Blades.

San Francisco has historically done a great job finding undrafted players who ultimately make an impact.

The Miami Herald reports free agent CB Terrell Buckley (Broncos) visited Miami Dolphins camp again on Monday. Coach Dave Wannstedt said the team is willing to sign Buckley, if he's willing to be a backup. WR Lamar Thomas also worked out with the Dolphins on Monday as he attempts another comeback. Thomas said he understands if the Dolphins don't re-sign him, but thought the workout went well. Also working out on Monday were several NFL draft prospects including Florida State WR Marvin "Snoop" Minnis and CB Clevan Thomas and four University of Miami prospects: S Al Blades, RB James Jackson, DB Delvin Brown and CB Leonard Myers. More prospects will visit Wednesday and Thursday.
