Special teams coach Paul Ferraro said, " Mewelde, as of right now today, is our punt returner. He certainly did a good job and was at a high level a year ago with that. But we're working some different people back there. [FS] Darren Sharper is taking some, [WR] Travis Taylor has taken some, we have some rookies in camp that will be in the pre-season games getting an opportunity. So Mewelde is our number one guy."
Wed, 21 Sep 2005 18:57:32 -0700
Bob Sansevere, of the Pioneer Press, reports with Minnesota Vikings WR Nate Burleson (knee) expected to miss the team's Week 3 game the team does not have a solid No. 1 wide receiver. "I can't tell you who'll be our No. 1 receiver until we start playing the game,'' Vikings head coach Mike Tice said. Tice called WR Travis Taylor his "most consistent receiver," and a team-leading 10 catches backs that up. He isn't the deep threat Burleson is, but the Vikings still can get by without the long pass - if QB Daunte Culpepper adapts. Culpepper needs to avoid turnovers and rebuild his confidence and the quickest way for him to rebuild it is to complete passes and move the chains. That means throwing short, high-percentage passes to RB Mewelde Moore and TE Jermaine Wiggins.

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports with the addition of WR Koren Robinson the Minnesota Vikings current wide receiver depth chart will change. WR Nate Burleson is still first followed by: WRs Travis Taylor, Marcus Robinson, Troy Williamson, and Koren Robinson. Given his experience, Burleson said he expected Koren Robinson to learn the system and push his way further up the depth chart. "He's not coming in thinking, `I'm going to be a 4, 3 or No. 2 receiver.' He's probably battling for a No. 1 job," Burleson said. "With him coming in, that just brings a whole another level of competition."
Thu, 08 Sep 2005 19:54:50 -0700
Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings WR Koren Robinson is getting a chance to revive a career derailed by substance abuse. Publicly the Vikings are saying Robinson will not play Sunday, Sept. 11th, and he may not be ready to play Week 2 either. Privately, though, the Vikings are expecting Robinson to further complicate their depth chart at receiver, which runs five deep. The Vikings now boast three players at the position who were top-10 draft picks - Robinson, WR Travis Taylor and rookie WR Troy Williamson. In addition, their go-to receiver, WR Nate Burleson, has proven he warranted higher than a third-round pick, and WR Marcus Robinson proved himself an asset last season, especially in the red zone. "Wow! That's an impressive group," said Will Lewis, the Seahawks' director of pro personnel. "Even though you lose a guy like Moss, you've improved across the board." Robinson said he won't rock the Vikings' ship. He said he hasn't been this hungry since he left North Carolina State with two years of eligibility remaining.
Wed, 31 Aug 2005 13:26:19 -0700
Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings WRs Travis Taylor and Marcus Robinson are not worried about who will open the regular season as the Vikings' No. 2 receiver position. Both receivers are battling for the spot, but because the Mnnesota offense frequently features three-receiver sets, the two contenders are not stressing. "Everybody knows we're going to use a lot of three wides, so no matter who starts, there will be a lot of balls to go around for everybody," Taylor said. Robinson agreed saying, "Starting means what? Your name is first on the list? We might start a game in three wides, so I don't get caught up too much in that. It doesn't make a difference at all, especially in this offense."
Sat, 20 Aug 2005 13:07:20 -0700
Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings WR Travis Taylor started at wide receiver ahead of WR Marcus Robinson for the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 19, which head coach Mike Tice said was more than coincidence. "I'd read into it," Tice said. "I put Travis Taylor ahead of Marcus Robinson three days ago. I didn't make an announcement about it. We've got to find ways of getting our playmakers the ball."
Sun, 07 Aug 2005 07:46:02 -0700
Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, Minnesota Vikings WR Travis Taylor is now challenging WR Marcus Robinson for the team's second starting wide receiver job. Taylor caught a team-high seven passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns in the team's scrimmage Friday, August 5. "He's never going to run by many people, but he's strong and can't be pressed," head coach Mike Tice said. "He's strong, he's thick, he's powerful and he's mature. Travis and Marcus, to me, right now are in a hell of a battle."
Mon, 25 Jul 2005 05:51:45 -0700
Don Seeholzer, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings WR Travis Taylor could challenge as the team's No. 3 wide receiver in 2005. He is very excited to be in Minnesota. Taylor called the Vikings to arrange a visit on the first day of free agency and demonstrated during offseason workouts that he could be an effective slot receiver. The former No. 1 draft choice could open the season as the No. 3 receiver if rookie WR Troy Williamson is slow to develop.
Wed, 15 Jun 2005 05:44:17 -0700
Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper can hardly wait for the team's July 30 opening of training camp. "I'm very excited," he said. "Everything is good. We're moving in the right direction to be world champions." Culpepper said the depth of the Vikings' receiving corps is as strong as ever, noting the progress of rookie WR Troy Williamson and veteran WR Travis Taylor. Culpepper feels the wide receivers can be as productive as they have always been, providing they stay healthy.
