The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers RB Jonas Lewis might be out for the year after re-injuring a groin muscle during practice last week. He was walking with a cane on Monday. Backup C Ben Lynch (ankle) and backup DT Reggie McGrew (ankle) both could be out for several more weeks. Cam Inman reports for the Contra Costa Times San Francisco 49ers backup S John Keith will have surgery Thursday to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, causing him to miss most, if not all, of the season. Coach Steve Mariucci said the team won't decide until after Thursday's surgery whether or not to place Keith on injured reserve. Ronnie Heard now becomes Lance Schulters' top backup at strong safety. RB/KR Jonas Lewis suffered a groin pull that likely will keep him out of Sunday's game at New Orleans and possibly longer, Mariucci said. OLB Julian Peterson (left ankle sprain) also likely won't play this week. RG Dave Fiore (shoulder), backup OT Matt Willig (right knee) and S Zack Bronson (mild knee sprain) are listed as probable for Sunday's game.

ESPN reports San Francisco 49ers RB Jonas Lewis strained his groin during today's game. He looks to be questionable for next week. S John Keith injured his left knee during the opening kickoff. He'll have an MRI on his knee ligaments on Monday, but he's listed as doubtful for next week.

Cam Inman reports for the Contra Costa Times San Francisco 49ers coach Steve Mariucci said RB Garrison Hearst will get the start on Sunday, but he won't get all the carries. Rookie RB Kevan Barlow often will relieve Hearst. "Right now, the plan is to start Garrison and use (rookie) Kevan Barlow quite a bit because we're committed to developing him as a tailback," Mariucci said. "They'll share that duty. We're going to see a little running back by committee and we'll find out if it's worth a darn." Mariucci added RBs Paul Smith and Jonas Lewis will make their biggest contributions on special teams.

As noted earlier, Hearst may face being a Sunday roster cut if he does not redo his contract. The team may turn to a committee approach at RB for the season. "I'm not of the mindset that it has to be mostly from one guy," Coach Steve Mariucci said. "That committee thing is a possibility unless one guy surfaces as the guy."

Speculation continues that Hearst could be released. Hearst took part in team drills but avoided reporters Monday. His agent did not return a phone call. Coach Steve Mariucci said it's unlikely Hearst, who started the previous three exhibitions, will play in the pre-season finale Friday in Denver. According to 49er.com, S Lance Schulters returned to practice today after being activated off the team's PUP list. "We have taken him (Schulters) off PUP and he will join us for the afternoon practice,” said coach Steve Mariucci. “He will be limited as to what he does this week and he will not play against the Chargers Saturday. Updating an earlier story, RB Jonas Lewis does not have a serious knee injury and he is expected back to practice soon and he is also expected to see "a lot of work" against the Chargers. WR Tai Streets remains out of practice as he continues to recover from off-season surgery for his fractured leg.

The Contra Costa Times reports the San Francisco 49ers expect to give RBs Garrison Hearst, Paul Smith and rookie Kevan Barlow equal amounts of time with the first-team offense as the team searches for its new starting running back. RB Jonas Lewis also could see time with the first string now that Barlow is suffering from a strained left quadriceps, which he suffered Friday in practice. Coach Steve Mariucci said, however, that Hearst's practice time likely will be limited for precautionary reasons.

However, the team isn't sure how much -- if any -- work he'll be able to do during the camp. The 49ers, as reported, have an open competition for the starting job this year. Head coach Steve Mariucci stated the team needs to see how far RB Paul Smith, who has looked good in practice, has come. The team also wants to find out if they have one guy that can be the 1,300 yard rusher they want or if they have to go by committee this year. He listed the possibilites for the starter's job as Garrison Hearst (injured), Paul Smith (inexperienced), Charlie Garner (unsigned) or someone they select in the NFL Draft.
