Giants | Angel Pagan to have surgery

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (back) has a bulging disc in his back that will require surgery Thursday, Sept. 25, according to manager Bruce Bochy. He's expected to be out for three months. Pagan hit .300 in 96 games this year, and he'll be replaced in the lineup by OF Gregor Blanco.

San Francisco Giants OF Gregor Blanco, who is 5-for-41 this season, said he's decided to change his approach and get back to the type of hitter he has been most of his career after trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark to begin the year. "I had to remind myself what kind of player I am," Blanco said. "Just get back the mentality of, `You can do this. You've done it before.' I need to hit the ball on the ground and use my legs. I need to be myself. I know what I am capable of doing." Blanco is essentially the fourth outfielder, and he isn't receiving consistent playing time.

Fantasy Tip: Michael Morse and Buster Posey could be options to play first base while Belt is out of the lineup. The team could also recall Travis Ishikawa from Triple-A Fresno to see some time at the position. Gregor Blanco or Hector Sanchez could see more playing time depending on what the team does at the position. Ishikawa, Blanco and Sanchez likely would only be NL-only options if they get more playing time.

The San Francisco Giants avoided arbitration with OF Gregor Blanco and 2B Tony Abreu Friday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to one-year deals with both. Blanco will receive $2.525 million and Abreu will make $745,000.
