Thu, 25 Apr 2013 11:24:26 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly plans on mixing and matching at third base, with 3B Juan Uribe starting at third base Thursday, April 25, after three games of INF Jerry Hairston Jr. playing the hot corner. 3B Nick Punto has also started there twice with 3B Luis Cruz hitting .087. "It's hard to say it belongs to anybody," Mattingly said of third base. "I'll keep trying to match up numbers the best I can. The bright side is they all catch the ball. For me, it's mix and match." Cruz is "working on stuff" in the batting cages to try to shake his slump. Fantasy Tip: This has now become a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues, perhaps even NL-only leagues, at least for now. Cruz will probably be given a shot to reclaim the job outright, but he'll have to make the most of the opportunities when he gets them. Look elsewhere for the time being.
Fri, 12 Apr 2013 18:20:39 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers 3B Luis Cruz started the season 0-for-17. He credits his father, who is a hitting coach in the Mexican League, for spotting his flaws physical and mental, and for providing just enough needling to keep Cruz loose.
Tue, 09 Apr 2013 20:59:57 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers 3B Luis Cruz was not in the lineup for a second consecutive game Tuesday, April 9, against the San Diego Padres. Cruz is hitless in his first 17 at-bats to start the season.
Sun, 07 Apr 2013 11:12:28 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers 3B Luis Cruz, 2B Mark Ellis and C A.J. Ellis are getting the day off against the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday, April 7.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 19:47:48 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers SS Justin Sellers might be the team's starter at shortstop on Opening Day, with 3B Luis Cruz starting at third base. Sellers might not necessarily be the full-time starter, but he could platoon at shortstop until SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb) is able to return. Fantasy Tip: Sellers is worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues for help at the middle infielder position, but his value is negligible in mixed formats at this point.
Thu, 21 Mar 2013 16:21:56 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly isn't happy with the options he has on the left side of the infield after the injury to SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb). "To be honest with you, I'm not comfortable with anything that's going on at short right now," Mattingly said. The top options to replace Ramirez at shortstop are 3B Luis Cruz and SS Dee Gordon. Mattingly is also unsure if Ramirez will return to shortstop when he's healthy. General manager Ned Colletti is more certain, saying he was confident Ramirez will return to shortstop in May. Fantasy Tip: Mattingly's unhappiness with his plethora of options can only mean one thing: He'll give the spots to whoever is playing the best, which clouds the fantasy picture. Cruz should have a job regardless, and Gordon presents the most upside with his speed. The other options don't generate much excitement.
Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:55:51 -0700 The Los Angeles Dodgers plan to use 3B Luis Cruz at shortstop while SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb) is out of the lineup. 3B Juan Uribe would play at third base during that time. Fantasy Tip: Cruz was already scheduled to be in the team's starting lineup as the third baseman, so his value will not change much. Uribe could become an option in National League-only leagues if he does get most of the time at third base with Ramirez out.
Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:09:43 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers SS Justin Sellers will be considered to fill in for SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb), even though Sellers was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque Tuesday, March 19. SS Dee Gordon (ankle) is dealing with a mild left ankle sprain. Sellers is considered a better pure defender than Gordon, but he was hitting only .150 this spring. INFs Luis Cruz, Nick Punto, Juan Uribe and Jerry Hairston Jr. are all options, as well. SS Miguel Rojas is in minor league camp and has been compared defensively to former SS Omar Vizquel. Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what direction the Dodgers will go at shortstop, but Cruz and Gordon make the most sense. The bottom line is none of these options have significant fantasy value, and Los Angeles will likely stick with whoever is playing the best.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 14:53:02 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said the team would move 3B Luis Cruz to shortstop if SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb) is out for an extended amount of time. INFs Nick Punto, Juan Uribe and Jerry Hairston Jr. would all be considered at third base in that situation. Fantasy Tip: Cruz was already slated to start at third base, so this won't change much other than making him eligible at shortstop. Punto, Uribe and Hairston could all cannibalize playing time from each other in some fashion.
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 19:56:45 -0800 Los Angeles Dodgers INF Brian Barden made a start at third base during the Cactus League spring game Tuesday, March 5. He is getting a chance to show what he can do with 1B Adrian Gonzalez and 3B Luis Cruz away from the team with Team Mexico at the World Baseball Classic.
