Former Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge is receiving interest from the Chicago Cubs for their vacant managerial position, according to a source familiar with the situation. Wedge left the Mariners earlier this month after three seasons. The Cubs' list of managerial candidates includes A.J. Hinch, Manny Acta, Rick Renteria and Dave Martinez. Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo is expected to be interviewed after the World Series.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is believed to be at the top of the team's wish list, and they will wait to see what he does before finalizing their plan.

San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus, along with former MLB managers Jim Tracy and Manny Acta, are not expected to be in contention for the Toronto Blue Jays' managerial vacancy. However, Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach, Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale, Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Blue Jays bench coach Don Wakamatsu and Blue Jays third base coach Brian Butterfield are still believed to be in the running.

Cleveland Indians OF Ezequiel Carrera has played pretty much every day since his promotion on Aug. 3, but manager Manny Acta is looking for more improvement. "Carrera has come up this year, his swing is a little bit better, more consistent. But he still needs to continue in his control of the strike zone," Acta said. "His walk-to-strikeout ratio's not good. It's not just necessarily about walking. It's about controlling the strike zone so you can handle better pitches and get a higher on-base percentage."

Indians | Roberto Hernandez not quite ready

Cleveland Indians SP Roberto Hernandez (ankle) threw a simulated game on Friday, Sept. 21, and manager Manny Acta said the pitcher is not quite there yet. "He threw three innings of a simulated game and did some pitchers' fielding practice. He still doesn't look confident enough running around and moving around to send him out there to compete in a game," Acta said.
