Tue, 05 Mar 2013 12:43:43 -0800 San Diego Padres OF Will Venable finally found an acceptable approach to his swing after entrusting hitting coach Phil Plantier with fixing his mechanics, and Venable went on to post career highs in hits (110), games (148), doubles (26), triples (eight), runs (62) and at-bats (417). Plantier and assistant hitting coach Alonzo Powell eliminated Venable's double toe tap with the front foot in his stride. He also kept his bat much more quiet instead of waving it back and forth. "I'm trying to build on the improvements I made with the swing last year and not changing a whole lot. I want to continue to be natural and let my ability take over and stay out of the way as far as tinkering with too much mechanical stuff," Venable said.

An eighth player, OF Will Venable, filed but settled with his team already. The Padres estimate their payroll will increase to $65 million with these arbitration filings.

"It's doing OK, it's still a little sore," manager Bud Black said. "We spoke today about if starting today's game would be beneficial. We decided that getting off the Achilles' was a good idea. We hope the pain subsides a little." OF Will Venable started in Maybin's stead.

San Diego could sign Quentin to a multi-year contract now, but it would be tough considering the team is waiting on new ownership. The Friars could also decide to trade OFs Chris Denorfia, Mark Kotsay or Will Venable.
