San Diego Padres OF Cameron Maybin (biceps) is opting not to have surgery to fix his ruptured left biceps tendon after meeting with doctors Thursday, March 6. Now, he may be able to return in four to six weeks instead of the initial diagnosis of two to three months. OF Will Venable will likely take Maybin's spot in the lineup and in center field.
Fantasy Tip: This is great news unless he suffers a setback and eventually needs surgery, which could end his season. Maybin may wind up only missing part of the first month of the season, which might warrant drafting him late in a very deep league if you have DL spots available to use.

San Diego Padres OF Cameron Maybin (biceps) will be out two to three months after his MRI exam showed a ruptured left biceps tendon.
Fantasy Tip: The Friars will likely shift Will Venable to center field. Chris Denorfia and Seth Smith can form a platoon in right field, with both players being valuable mainly in NL-only leagues. Maybin's 2013 season was derailed by injuries, and this year hasn't started any better. He could become a force for stolen bases later in the year, but he shouldn't be drafted in standard leagues now.

San Diego Padres OF Will Venable had a walkoff single with the bases loaded Wednesday, May 29, and he is 19-for-48 (.396) in his career with the bases loaded, which is the third best average in team history in those situations behind former 3B Phil Nevin and OF Tony Gwynn.
Fantasy Tip: Venable is a platoon bat for San Diego that should only be on the rosters of extremely deep mixed leagues because of his limited playing time and low batting average and home run totals at PETCO Park. He's best utilized for his speed in NL-only leagues.
