Updating ongoing stories, Dennis Georgatos reports for the Mercury News the San Francisco 49ers gave QB Giovanni Carmazzi an injury settlement and they plan to release him by early next week, agent Jeffrey Sperbeck said Wednesday. "For the most part, we're just going through the language," Sperbeck said. "It's not official yet, but we are going to have a settlement and he'll no longer be with the 49ers." Terms of the proposed settlement for Carmazzi, who was due to receive $358,000 this season, were not released.

Carmazzi may be the next cut as the team would prefer to take only 4 quarterbacks to camp with them.

49ers.com reports that San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Garcia and Tim Rattay will be the team's starting and backup quarterbacks, but Giovanni Carmazzi, Brandon Doman and Aaron Garcia are competing for the team's third QB spot. Garcia may have an advantage because of his experience. Carmazzi hasn't been cleared to pass in drills after missing the last season with a shoulder injury. Head coach Steve Mariucci said, "It is yet to be determined when he can throw again. I'm sure he's feeling very frustrated by all of this. He's doing everything in his power to get better."

He will compete with QBs Giovanni Carmazzi, Aaron Garcia and potentially Billy Cockerham for the job. "He fits nicely in our type of system," said offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. "He's mobile, throws well on the run, makes good decisions and is very accurate with the ball."

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers LB Alex Lincoln, a seventh-round draft choice, and second year QB Giovanni Carmazzi (shoulder) may both start training camp on the PUP list. Lincoln said he's feeling a lot better and has been taking medication for an arthritic condition in his pelvis that has apparently caused back pain and numbness in his right arm. He has been working out on a limited basis. Carmazzi's injured shoulder flared up during his time in NFL Europe and is awaiting the test results from a specialist in Los Angeles.

The Rhein Fire, of NFL Europe, put Carmazzi on the injured reserve list with two weeks remaining in the season but it has not been determined whether Carmazzi will need surgery.

The San Francisco 49ers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, have some decisions to make at the quarterback position this off-season as they're unlikely to keep four QBs on roster again. Thus, the team is likely to part with at least one player between Tim Rattay, Rick Mirer and Giovanni Carmazzi. They may cut as many as two of them. Carmazzi hasn't shown the team much so far but has the right physical tools. He's currently working with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and will play in NFL Europe again this year.

The San Jose Mercury News reports with four games left, the 49ers are thinking about giving some playing time to backup QBs Rick Mirer and Tim Rattay. Barring injury to QB Jeff Garcia, coach Steve Mariucci said the main factor in determining whether Mirer or Rattay get into a game would be the score. Rattay, a seventh-round draft pick who beat out Giovanni Carmazzi for the No. 3 job, is looking for his first NFL action.
