Yankees | Chamberlain could spend part of 2010 season in minors
Sun, 11 Oct 2009 11:24:30 -0700

The New York Post's Joel Sherman reports that New York Yankees SP Joba Chamberlain was on the verge of being optioned to the minor leagues in August due to poor performance, but was kept in the rotation because the team had nowhere to turn for viable alternatives. The Yankees felt it was too risky to have SPs Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre in the rotation, and manager Joe Girardi did not want to disrupt the success of the team's bullpen by removing Alfredo Aceves, Phil Coke or Phil Hughes. In addition, Ian Kennedy was recovering from aneurysm surgery at the time. Reportedly, several team officials felt Chamberlain was too comfortable in his starting role because he was not in serious jeopardy of being demoted, possibly leading to regression as a starter. However, if Chamberlain's struggles continue into next season, there is a good chance that he could spend part of the season in the minors.
