Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum downplayed the team's chances of signing free-agent 1B Prince Fielder (Brewers). "There haven't been any discussions with us for Prince, that's just not going to happen," Sveum said. "We have our first baseman in Bryan LaHair and (Anthony) Rizzo waiting in the wings as well. We're doing OK with big power left-handed hitters right now." Executive Theo Epstein wasn't as quick to shoot down the notion that Chicago could still be in the running for Fielder.

Chicago Cubs executives Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer feel 1B Anthony Rizzo should be an impact player and should be a starting first baseman in the major leagues no later than 2013. "He has fantastic makeup," Hoyer said. "After beating cancer when he was 19 years old, he's a very strong individual." Rizzo is expected to start the season with Triple-A Iowa, with 1B Bryan LaHair starting with the big club.

Chicago Cubs executive Theo Epstein said Wednesday, Jan. 4, that 1B Bryan LaHair will be the team's starting first baseman this season, which means the team won't re-sign 1B Carlos Pena. "I think hitters hit no matter where they are, and this kid has hit," Epstein said. "He's hit everywhere he's ever been. You can't dominate the Triple-A level more than he did this year."

Chicago Cubs 1B Carlos Pena will stay at the position for the remainder of the season, according to manager Mike Quade. Speculation had OF Bryan LaHair possibly playing some first as an audition for 2012, but Quade likes Pena's bat in the lineup.

Chicago Cubs 1B Bryan LaHair went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks Saturday, Sept. 17, against the Houston Astros. The homer was LaHair's first since being called up Sept. 2. LaHair has hit safely in 10 of his past 11 games.
