Fri, 24 Mar 2006 20:31:08 -0800

Baker told the Post-Dispatch Thursday, March 23, that the Rams did not make him an offer. "We did make an offer," Zygmunt said Friday, March 24. "It's a joke. I think it's sort of funny. He certainly isn't the first player that rejected one of our offers, and I know that he won't be the last. That's his prerogative. That's part of the business. That's free agency. We wish him the best."

Rams | Baker says he was not given an offer

Fri, 24 Mar 2006 05:48:53 -0800

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports free agent P Jason Baker (Panthers) said reports of him being too expensive for the St. Louis Rams are not true. Baker said his meeting with Rams' head coach Scott Linehan went well. Baker said he was chagrined to learn that the Rams were going with P Matt Turk, with the implication that Baker's contract demands were beyond what the Rams were willing to pay. "There was never even an offer presented," Baker said. "Literally, there was no negotiation. I went over there with the intent of leaving a Ram. But I was never even given an opportunity to say 'yes' or 'no' to anything. All I got was a steak and had a doctor poke me a couple times. According to Baker, the Rams kind of floated the idea of Baker playing for the minimum. But given the fact that Baker led the NFC in net punting in 2005, and the fact that he had a $1 million-a-year offer on the table from the Carolina Panthers, Baker thought the Rams were joking. Apparently they weren't.

Panthers | Looking for Consistency in Punting Department

Mon, 06 Jun 2005 21:54:12 -0700

Joe Menzer, of the Winston-Salem Journal, reports the number one trait special teams coach Danny Crossman is looking for in a punter this season is consistency. The three candidates who are vying to replace P Todd Sauerbrun are: Ps Tom Rouen, Jason Baker and Steve Cheek. "We think we have three guys who have some ability," Crossman said. "We have three different kinds of guys. We have a veteran (in Rouen) who has done it a long time in this league and two young guys - one who is exclusively a punter (Cheek) and one in Jason Baker who can also kick off. Between the three of them, we think we have a good mix. Now the most important thing is who can consistently deliver the ball down the field."
