Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin made a late change to his lineup Wednesday, April 18, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, moving OF Seth Smith to right field and OF Josh Reddick (illness) serving as the designated hitter. Originally, Reddick was to play the field, but he is battling "flu-like symptoms," according to the team.

Oakland Athletics OF Manny Ramirez will serve as the designated hitter in the team's intrasquad game Thursday, March 1. He will also be the DH when they face the Seattle Mariners in their first spring game Friday, March 2. 1B Brandon Allen, OF Chris Carter, OF Jonny Gomes, 1B Kila Ka'aihue and OF Seth Smith will also rotate at the DH spot this spring.

Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane sees OF Seth Smith as the team's regular left fielder this season, with OF Josh Reddick in right field. OF Collin Cowgill will be in the mix as the fourth outfielder. "He's always hit right-handers very, very well. He'll also get an opportunity to play against left-handers more here, probably, than he did in Colorado. Hopefully, with more playing time, we'll see some improvement against left-handers," Beane said.

The Colorado Rockies signed OF Seth Smith to a one-year contract Sunday, Jan. 15. Terms of the deal were undisclosed, but a source said the deal is approximately $2.4 million. With the team, the two sides avoided arbitration.
