DT Bryant Young suffered a sprained left ankle on a cut block by a Rams lineman and he is questionable for next Monday's game. OLT Derrick Deese is also questionable because of a bruised right calf. OT Matt Willig, who had arthroscopic knee surgery some two weeks ago, replaced Deese in the second half. LB Derek Smith (left shoulder sprain) and defensive DE John Milem (left ankle sprain) are probable for next Monday.

Cam Inman reports for the Contra Costa Times San Francisco 49ers backup S John Keith will have surgery Thursday to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, causing him to miss most, if not all, of the season. Coach Steve Mariucci said the team won't decide until after Thursday's surgery whether or not to place Keith on injured reserve. Ronnie Heard now becomes Lance Schulters' top backup at strong safety. RB/KR Jonas Lewis suffered a groin pull that likely will keep him out of Sunday's game at New Orleans and possibly longer, Mariucci said. OLB Julian Peterson (left ankle sprain) also likely won't play this week. RG Dave Fiore (shoulder), backup OT Matt Willig (right knee) and S Zack Bronson (mild knee sprain) are listed as probable for Sunday's game.

It went so well, the team thought about playing him this week. Although he's been upgraded to doubtful, coach Steve Mariucci said he's leaning against playing him. 49ers.com reports San Francisco 49ers backup OT Matt Willig injured his knee in practice yesterday. "It was really weird because it was a non-contact situation," he said. "I was turning to run downfield after a pass play and I just heard something pop." He was evaluated by 49ers medical staff Thursday morning and will undergo an arthroscopic procedure later today. He will definitely miss Sunday’s opener against the Falcons and will be re-evaluated next week.
