Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, May 5. He threw only 59 of his 102 pitches for strikes and walked three batters in what was the shortest outing by any Rays starter this year. Manager Joe Maddon said his stuff and velocity were fine but he lacked command on his fastball.

The Tampa Bay Rays want SP Jeremy Hellickson to throw fewer cutters. "The problem is when a young pitcher who's had a lot of success tries to introduce a new pitch into the mix, then he's possibly taking away from something else that he does really well," manager Joe Maddon said.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (head) allowed five earned runs, seven hits and three walks over five innings in a no-decision Saturday, April 14, against the Boston Red Sox. It was Hellickson's first start since being hit in the head with a ball during batting practice Wednesday, April 11. "The cutter was good. I think the first two home runs were good pitches. I've just got to throw more strikes," Hellickson said. "I felt good. Arm felt good. Nothing with the head. Just made some bad pitches."

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (head) isn't dealing with a concussion, and if he passes one more test Friday, April 13, he'll be cleared to make his next start against the Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 14. "He's doing well," manager Joe Maddon said. "…It's looking pretty good right now. He's looking pretty normal, speaking pretty normal. I think he's going to be OK."

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (head) underwent X-rays, a CT scan and concussion-related tests Wednesday, April 11, after being hit in the side of the head. He will have more concussion tests Thursday, April 12, and he has some swelling near his left eye. The team will make a decision Thursday on whether he will make his next start.
