Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) said he'll throw on Thursday, March 13, for the first time since elbow surgery. It's scheduled to be a five-minute session with tosses at 45 to 60 feet.
Fantasy Tip: He'll likely be ready to rejoin the big club sometime in May, but a longer absence and uncertainty surrounding his rotation spot are possible. He's a shaky mixed-league stash.

Tampa Bay Rays SPs Jake Odorizzi, Erik Bedard and Cesar Ramos all pitched Monday, March 10, as they fight for the fifth spot in the rotation. In his first start of the spring, Odorizzi lasted 2 1/3 innings; he allowed two hits and one walk, also hitting a batter and striking out one. He's still working on the splitter-changeup he has dubbed "The Thing." Bedard, cultivating a changeup of his own, yielded three runs on five hits in three frames. Ramos gave up five hits and two runs in 4 1/3 frames. Manager Joe Maddon said spring training results will not dictate his selection for the fifth starter.
Fantasy Tip: Odorizzi stands as the favorite and is most worth a deep-mixed speculation, but this could be a mix-and-match situation until Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) returns, and even afterward.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) said he is about a month away from throwing again, but is feeling really good as he recovers from elbow surgery. "I feel great," Hellickson said. "First few days after surgery I wasn't doing much, but since then, I've felt really, really good. No pain. No soreness. Kind of weak, but feeling great."

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow last week and is expected to be out until mid to late May. The surgery was done to remove loose bodies from his arm in what was a minor surgery, but he's expected to miss the first six to eight weeks of the season. He went 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA in 2013. SP Jake Odorizzi will likely be counted on to fill Hellickson's rotation spot. SPs Alex Colome and Enny Romero are other options.
Fantasy Tip: Odorizzi can be a late-round flier to fill out your rotation in deeper leagues. He leans more on control, like Hellickson, so his upside is limited, at least this early in his major league career.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson will be recalled from Single-A Charlotte and start Wednesday, Sept. 4. Hellickson is 10-8 with a 5.28 ERA this season.
Fantasy Tip: Hellickson has a rough month of August. You can probably wait to re-acquire him in mixed leagues, but he should be owned in mostly all AL-only formats. You may want to reserve him on your bench, though, until he settles down.

The Tampa Bay Rays have not yet announced who will pitch Wednesday, Sept. 4. SPs Jeremy Hellickson, Roberto Hernandez and Jake Odorizzi are all in the running to get the starting nod.
Tue, 27 Aug 2013 15:23:31 -0700
The Tampa Bay Rays optioned SP Jeremy Hellickson to high Single-A Charlotte.
Fantasy Tip: Some sort of demotion was likely, but this is a bit of a wake-up call. He needs to work on aggressiveness, pitch selection and location. This could be a temporary banishment; he could move up quickly if he proves himself. Either way, Matt Moore (elbow) is expected to return within the week, so they'll cover Hellickson's rotation spot that way. It's safe to drop Hellickson in most mixed leagues, but he could come back up for a few starts in September if you're desperate.
