Updating a previous report, the Tampa Bay Rays non-tendered RP Andy Sonnanstine Monday, Dec. 12, making him a free agent. Executive vice president Andrew Friedman said Sonnanstine was no longer an "optimal fit" and "we felt like there would be better opportunities for him elsewhere."

Tampa Bay Rays RPs J.P. Howell and Andy Sonnanstine are likely to be non-tendered by the deadline Monday, Dec. 12. SP Jeff Niemann, RP Joel Peralta, SP David Price and OF B.J. Upton are obvious candidates that will be tendered contracts.

The Tampa Bay Rays set their roster for the Divisional Series against the Texas Rangers. The relievers will be RPs Juan Cruz, Wade Davis, Kyle Farnsworth, Brandon Gomes, J.P. Howell, Jake McGee and Joel Peralta. The team will carry three catchers in Cs John Jaso, Jose Lobaton and Kelly Shoppach. 1B Dan Johnson, SP Jeff Niemann, RP Cesar Ramos, OF Justin Ruggiano and RP Andy Sonnanstine were left off the roster.

The Tampa Bay Rays promoted RP Andy Sonnanstine from Triple-A Durham Friday, Sept. 2. He is expected to be used in long relief and extra innings situations.

The Tampa Bay Rays have optioned SP Andy Sonnanstine to Triple-A Durham, in order to get him regular work as a starting pitcher. Sonnanstine had only pitched one inning over the last 18 days and three innings in the last five weeks. In a corresponding move, OF Brandon Guyer was recalled from Durham. He is in the starting lineup against the New York Yankees Sunday, July 10.
