Peterson said he believes he can participate in some drills and even take part in some plays but will do what the coaches and trainers tell him.

"The ability to get back to where I want; the cutting ability and being as explosive as I used to be - and better," Peterson said. "I'm doing pretty good running. Conditioning-wise, I have a long ways to go, but I am making strides. The biggest hurdle right now is being explosive, being able to cut like I once did before."

Peterson ran and participated in drills in front of media members Wednesday, May 9. He said he does not feel any pain in his surgically repaired knee and has been smart during his rehab. Peterson believes he is about 50 percent in terms of cutting and explosion.

Sugarman said he's willing to be the bad guy who makes Peterson mad by slowing down the rehab process if that's what's best for Peterson's recovery, even though Sugarman thinks it's great that Peterson is optimistic about being on the field. "I love Adrian," Sugarman said. "But let's make this clear: I'm still not going to be quoted as saying he's going to play in the first game. That's not fair. I don't know that ... He'll keep throwing that out there. And good for him. That's great. That's obviously our goal, to get him playing the first game. But only if he's functionally safe to do it. This is our franchise. We can't be foolish about this."

"I'm preparing to be the guy," Gerhart said. "I try to do that every year. But this year it's a little more prevalent. I'm doing everything I can to be here, work hard, work with the new guys we have coming in. I'm pushing everybody and getting pushed by other guys. Preparing to be the guy, depending on whether Adrian comes back."

We're trying to judge movement and he wants to run a 4.3 40," Frazier said. "He has to let that graft continue to heal. And he understands there's a time frame he's working within. So far so good."

Frazier said he is still cautiously optimistic that Peterson will be ready by Week 1 of next season. Peterson is "just beginning to run this week on land," Frazier said. "It's too early right now to say he's absolutely going to make the first game but so far he's on target with everything we've asked him to do."
