Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) is confident he won't miss extended time with inflammation in his AC joint in his shoulder. He could still land on the disabled list if he needs another anti-inflammatory injection. Zimmerman would be eligible to return May 6 if he does land on the DL. INF Tyler Moore and OFs Brett Carroll and Bryce Harper are options to be called up if Zimmerman goes on the shelf.

The Washington Nationals designated OF Brett Carroll for assignment Friday, April 13. The move makes room for the return of OF Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, April 14.

Washington Nationals OF Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) will be activated from the disabled list Saturday, April 14, where he will become the starting center fielder over OF Roger Bernadina. "He's in great shape," manager Davey Johnson said. "He had a great rehab program. Did awfully well. He's still fine. He had a great workout with the boys. He looks good to go." OFs Steve Lombardozzi and Brett Carroll are candidates to be sent down. Johnson plans to play Ankiel on an everyday basis. It's unlikely that OF Mark DeRosa will play much at first base with Bernadina moving to left field.

Ankiel and OF Mike Morse (lat) are expected to return by April 12. OFs Brett Carroll and Xavier Nady and INFs Steve Lombardozzi and Chad Tracy will all make the opening day roster. OF Roger Bernadina is expected to start in center field on opening day.

The Washington Nationals released OF Jason Michaels Thursday, March 29. OFs Brett Carroll and Xavier Nady now seem like locks to make the opening day roster. RP Ryan Perry was also optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson is worried that OF Mike Morse (lat) won't be ready for the regular season, even though Morse is optimistic he'll be ready. In case Morse isn't good to go, OF Mark DeRosa will begin playing in left field in spring games. INF Steve Lombardozzi is also seeing some time in the outfield. If Morse begins on the disabled list, a spot will be opened up for OFs Brett Carroll, Jason Michaels and Chad Tracy.

Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth will start in right field to begin the season, with OFs Roger Bernadina and Rick Ankiel splitting duties in center field now that OF Bryce Harper will open the season in the minors. OF Brett Carroll is another candidate in center field. "I think Jayson Werth can handle center field, but Jayson might get beat up a little bit," manager Davey Johnson said. "I would like to have younger legs out there. (Harper) will be more comfortable when he comes back here again. He will have a little more experience in center field."
