Indians | Lara undergoes two surgeries

Updating a previous report, Tom Withers, of The Associated Press, reports Cleveland Indians P Juan Lara (back) underwent two surgeries Sunday, Dec. 23, as a result of the car accident he was involved in last month. Lara had his spine surgically stabilized and had his fractured arm repaired.

Updating a continuing story, the Associated Press reports injured Cleveland Indians P Juan Lara (fractured spine, severe brain trauma, broken ribs and punctured lung) was moved from a hospital in the Dominican Republic to a medical facility in Cleveland Friday, Dec. 21, after it was determined his condition had stabilized sufficiently for him to be moved. He had been injured in a car-motorcycle accident Nov. 24. "It's definitely a step in the right direction for Juan," said team spokesman Bart Swain.

Paul Hoynes, of The Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Indians RP Juan Lara is breathing on his own and talking to his family. Lara has been fitted with a halo vest because of a cervical fracture and could be flown by ambulance plane from the Dominican Republic to Cleveland or Miami for surgery in the next couple of weeks.

Updating a continuing story, the Associated Press reports Cleveland Indians RP Juan Lara (spinal fracture, brain trauma) remains hospitalized in critical condition in the Dominican Republic following a weekend car accident in which a motorcycle struck his sports utility vehicle. While examining Lara, doctors there determined he also has a spinal fracture and severe brain trauma. "Juan's condition is very fragile," said hospital spokeswoman Dashira Martinez. "In the last medical report we found that he has a severe brain trauma, and we also found a fracture in the spinal column, with the D2 (second vertebra) in an unstable condition." According to Martinez, doctors have not yet determined whether Lara will have any paralysis, but are giving it more time.

Updating a previous item, The Associated Press reports Cleveland Indians RP Juan Lara (head) remained hospitalized in critical condition because of a head injury suffered in an accident that killed two people on a motorcycle in the Dominican Republic. Lara is breathing with help from a ventilator and has two fractured ribs, said Dashira Martinez , a representative for the Plaza de la Salud Hospital in Santo Domingo.

MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports Cleveland Indians RP Juan Lara (unknown) was seriously hurt in a car accident in the Dominican Republic Saturday night, Nov. 24. He is being tended to in a Dominican hospital but might need to be transported to the U.S. to have surgery performed, according to team spokesman Bart Swain. The accident, which left two people dead, occurred when a motorcycle struck a sport utility vehicle driven by Lara, which had been stopped at an intersection in San Pedro de Macoris. The two killed were both on the motorcycle, which struck the passenger side of the SUV at high speed. "We are monitoring his status very closely," said Swain, "and he is definitely in our prayers right now."
