Rockies | Chris Nelson has plenty of competition

Fri, 03 Feb 2012 14:10:01 -0800

Colorado Rockies 2B Chris Nelson will be competing with 2B Jonathan Herrera, 3B Brendan Harris, 3B Brandon Wood, 3B DJ LeMahieu, 2B Eric Young Jr. and 3B Jordan Pacheco in spring training for a spot as a utility infielder this year behind 2B Marco Scutaro.

Manager Jim Tracy pointed out that Nelson's back hip was drifting into pitches last year, which made it tough for him to get inside the inside pitches and keep from being jammed. "I got exposed a little bit last year with fastballs in, with me coming up trying to take everything to right field," Nelson said. "Guys are a little smarter and they saw that. They started jamming me, coming in more. This offseason, I just worked on the inside pitch while still staying consistent away."

Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez to DL

Fri, 22 Jul 2011 15:43:44 -0700

The Colorado Rockies placed OF Carlos Gonzalez (wrist) on the 15-day disabled list Friday, July 22, with strained ligaments in his right wrist. In a corresponding move, the team recalled IF/OF Eric Young Jr.

Fantasy Tip: This move was pretty much expected after Car-Go appeared to re-injure his wrist seriously in the club's contest Thursday. Thankfully, tests revealed only the strained ligaments in the wrist in which he had previously sustained a bone bruise. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined, but fantasy owners will have a clearer idea of how to proceed, at least. Young probably won't serve as much more than depth, but his speed can always be a difference-maker. This pretty much ensures that Dexter Fowler, who has been pretty hot since his call-up, will be in the lineup regularly for a while. Ty Wigginton and Ryan Spilborghs will continue to get ABs here and there, too.
