Braves | Eric Young favorite to start in Braves OF

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 17:17:04 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr. was confirmed as the favorite of Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez to start in center field while OF Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is out. Gonzalez cautioned, "We've still got a lot more games to be played and a lot more work to be done."

Fantasy Tip: Young emerged as the likely frontrunner to start in Upton's absence, but Gonzalez's confirmation enhances Young's draft appeal. The speedy outfielder stole 30 bases in part-time work last year and 46 bases in a full-time role in 2013. His ability to steal bases in bunches is the only reason to own him, but speed-needy drafters should consider using a late-round pick on Young.

Braves | Eric Young launches two-run shot

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:26:55 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr. hit a two-run home run and stole a base Monday, March 9, during the team's 2-1 Grapefruit League win over the Washington Nationals.

Fantasy Tip: Young appears to be the front-runner for the opening day center field job, and if he continues his strong play, he'll lap the competition soon. Speed is his main attribute, and at 29, he needs to elevate his entire game to stick in the league. He had 30 stolen bases in just 316 plate appearances last season, so consider Young a viable late-round flier in all formats, and especially if speed is a category of need. Additionally, with Melvin Gordon Jr.'s poor play over the past two seasons, there is a chance Young could remain a fixture in the Braves lineup, even when Gordon Jr. returns from injury.

Braves | Eric Young off to good start

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 16:44:41 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr. has gone 0-for-3 with three walks, a hit by pitch and two stolen bases in two spring training games. Young is expected to compete with OFs Todd Cunningham and Eury Perez for the starting center field job while Melvin Upton Jr. (foot) is out of the lineup. Young has not played much in center field but believes he can become a quality center fielder with hard work during the spring.

Fantasy Tip: Young probably has an edge over the other candidates because of his major league experience. Young could be a later-round option in drafts if he wins the job because of his stolen base potential.

Braves | Eric Young turning heads

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 18:09:14 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr. has been impressive in the first week of spring training workouts with his ability, conditioning and work habits. Beat writer David O'Brien thinks Young might be the favorite for opening day in center field.

Fantasy Tip: If Young is able to win the starting center field job he would obviously be a decent FantasyScore option, especially for his speed potential. Just don't expect much in the way of power.

Braves | Manager likes the speed Eric Young brings

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 13:15:09 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr. received praise from manager Fredi Gonzalez Thursday, Feb. 26. Gonzalez noted Young brings a speed dynamic the team has lacked in recent years.

Fantasy Tip: Young stole 30 bases with just 316 plate appearances last season, and he had 46 swipes in 2013, when he played in 148 games. He shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a one-trick pony, but in the later rounds of mixed drafts, Young is a viable speed target.

Braves | Eric Young looking to win a job

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 14:06:16 -0800

Atlanta Braves OF Eric Young Jr., who hit a career-worst .229 with one home run and 30 stolen bases in 100 games for the New York Mets in 2014, has the chance to compete with OFs Zoilo Almonte and Eury Perez for a spot as a backup outfielder or platoon job in left field. He could also play some second base in a pinch. Not working in Young's favor is that Almonte is out of minor league options.

Fantasy Tip: Young is mainly valuable for his speed, but without a spot that gives him consistent at-bats, he's not much use to fantasy owners. Keep an eye on how the outfield battles go this spring. If he wins a spot as a platoon partner in left field, he could be a deep sleeper in deep mixed leagues.
