The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled OF Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis Friday, May 18, and optioned RP Evan Meek back to Indy in a corresponding move. Hernandez hit .266 with five doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs in 38 games with Indianapolis. He'll be making his major league debut.

The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled RP Evan Meek from Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday, May 16, and optioned OF Alex Presley to Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Meek tossed four scoreless outings in the minors. Presley was stuck in a 3-for-42 slump and was hitless in his last 14 at-bats. OF Jose Tabata is hitting leadoff Wednesday in Presley's place.

The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned RP Evan Meek to Triple-A Indianapolis Monday, April 30. The team hopes that regular work with Indianapolis will get him on track quicker. "We feel he is close," manager Clint Hurdle said. "To get him reps right now (at the Major League level), there are not many leveraged situations available. We do feel this is the best opportunity to get him to finish this process he's been on, to get him to the finish line quicker."

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli will be the team's primary eighth-inning setup man out of the bullpen, according to skipper Clint Hurdle. RP Tony Watson is the only lefty in the pen, and RP Chris Resop is set for the seventh inning. RP Jared Hughes will be in long relief, and Hurdle has yet to define RP Evan Meek's role. "It's going to be interesting to see where his niche evolves," Hurdle said, adding that Meek has been effective against left-handed batters as well as righties.

The Pittsburgh Pirates may decide to open the regular season with eight relievers in their bullpen as a result of SP Charlie Morton (hip) being on the disabled list. RPs Joel Hanrahan, Jason Grilli and Chris Resop appear to be locks to make the team, with RPs Tony Watson, Evan Meek and Juan Cruz also having good chances of being on the 25-man roster. RPs Daniel Moskos, Jared Hughes and Chris Leroux are also in the hunt for a spot in the bullpen, although Leroux is out of minor league options.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Evan Meek will make $875,000 as part of his one-year deal to avoid arbitration. He will have a chance to make another $25,000 in incentives.

The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled 3B Pedro Alvarez, P Aaron Thompson and Daniel Moskos from the minors Tuesday, Sept. 6. Also, RP Evan Meek (shoulder) was activated from the 60-day disabled list and SPs Kevin Correia (oblique) and Paul Maholm (shoulder) were moved to the 60-day DL.
