If the Cleveland Indians do not bring in a candidate to close from outside of the organization, RPs Cody Allen, Matt Capps, Vinnie Pestano and Bryan Shaw are the likely leading candidates to replace RP Chris Perez in the closer's role.

The Cleveland Indians are expected to tender contracts to OFs Michael Brantley and Drew Stubbs, SPs Justin Masterson and Josh Tomlin and RPs Vinnie Pestano and Marc Rzepczynski. RPs Frank Herrmann and Blake Wood, who are both recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, are borderline cases.

Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said RPs Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw are the top candidates to replace RP Chris Perez as the team's closer heading into next season. The team is hoping RP Vinnie Pestano can have a bounce-back season in 2014.
Fantasy Tip: As was mentioned previously, Joe Smith might also be a name to watch for, although the Tribe may prefer to leave him in a setup role. Allen and Shaw will be cheap late-round saves material.

Cleveland Indians RP Vinnie Pestano has a career-high 4.19 ERA and has allowed 35 hits in 34 1/3 innings this season. "I don't know if you can pinpoint one, we've tried so hard to figure it out, how do we make it better, that's the goal," manager Terry Francona said. "I think it's the lack of finish on his fastball, think he's tried to find that. It's probably cost him some location. It's been tough, I know he's frustrated."

The Cleveland Indians optioned RP Vinnie Pestano to Triple-A Columbus.
Fantasy Tip: Pestano was once a shoo-in to take the closer job from Chris Perez. However, he has been abysmal all season.

Cleveland Indians RP Vinnie Pestano's velocity and command have been off since he returned from the disabled list May 16 after dealing with a sore right elbow. Since then, he's 1-2 with a 5.66 ERA (13 earned runs in 20 2/3 innings) and has allowed 24 hits, 12 walks and has 22 strikeouts. Manager Terry Francona wants to return Pestano to the eighth-inning setup role once he regains some confidence. RPs Joe Smith and Cody Allen will see action in the eighth inning in the meantime.

Cleveland Indians RP Joe Smith will replace RP Vinnie Pestano in the eighth-inning setup duties for the time being to allow Pestano to regain some of his confidence.
Fantasy Tip: This news probably makes it acceptable to cut Pestano in mixed leagues until he regains a firm grasp on eighth-inning duties once again.

Cleveland Indians SP Chris Perez (shoulder) will be activated from the disabled list Thursday, June 27.
Fantasy Tip: Perez will immediately be returned to the closing duties, booting Vinnie Pestano back to a setup role.

Cleveland Indians RP Chris Perez (shoulder) is feeling healthy but is dealing with a mechanical problem that led to him allowing five runs and five hits (three home runs) in 23 pitches in his second rehab outing with Double-A Akron Tuesday, June 18. Pitching coach Mickey Callaway and bullpen coach Kevin Cash think Perez is opening up too early in his delivery, which is hurting his velocity. Perez will throw Friday, June 21, and he'll likely need another rehab appearance. Manager Terry Francona said Perez won't be activated from the disabled list after a bullpen session Friday.
Fantasy Tip: This is good news for Vinnie Pestano owners, even if Perez returns at some point next week. It gives deep mixed owners more reason to hang onto Pestano even when Perez returns to ninth-inning duties.
