Cleveland Indians RP Vinnie Pestano said Tuesday, March 4, that he weighed in at 206 pounds, which is 10-15 pounds lighter than past springs. He decided to use this past winter to get himself in better physical condition.
Fantasy Tip: Pestano is trying to work his way back up the depth chart after losing his setup role last season, and eventually finding himself in the minors. He has looked good initially, and could re-emerge as a solid source of ERA and WHIP in most rotisserie leagues if he pitches to his potential. He also could be a nice source of holds for specialty leagues which use that category.

Cleveland Indians RP Vinnie Pestano needed just seven pitches to work through a scoreless inning in a Cactus League spring appearance Monday, March 3, against the Texas Rangers. He struggled last season, losing his setup role, and eventually ending up with Triple-A Columbus. He is trying to work his way back up the depth chart. "I'm not gonna get excited about a seven-pitch inning in March," Pestano said. "But it was good. I was able to go out there and locate for the most part."

Cleveland Indians RP Vinnie Pestano said Monday, Feb. 10, he had no regrets about going to arbitration. He was caught off guard when the team used quotes he gave to reporters as fuel for their case, however. "You're being honest and accountable and saying the right things and being there," Pestano said. "and then later you find your own words in the paper, and somebody is trying to use your words against you to drive your value down. Whether that played a big role in the decision, I don't know." The Indians had not gone to an arbitration hearing since 1991.

Cleveland Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway revealed that RP Vinnie Pestano suffered an elbow injury while pitching in the World Baseball Classic for Team USA last spring, which resulted in altered mechanics and decreased effectiveness. "I think some of that WBC injury really trained his arm to do something different than he's done in the past," said Callaway. "The reason Vinnie was so good in the past is that he has unorthodox mechanics. When he had a little bit of an injury in the WBC, he started throwing like a normal person, which isn't good." Callaway is confident that Pestano will be able to bounce back this season.
