Pirates | Mark Melancon saddled with loss

Sat, 21 May 2016 18:40:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon took the loss against the Colorado Rockies Saturday, May 21, allowing three unearned runs on one hit while walking one and striking out two.

Fantasy Tip: An error didn't do Melancon any favors, and despite the loss, he remains one of the more reliable and productive fantasy closers.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Atlanta Braves Monday, May 16, to pick up his 12th save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon has picked up a save in each of his last five outings even though he allowed a run in one of the outings. Melancon is one of the better closers in baseball and should be a starter in all leagues.

Pirates | Mark Melancon blows first save

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 20:14:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon blew his first save of the year by allowing two hits (one home run) and two earned runs while striking out two in an inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday, April 24. The blown save snapped Melancon's streak of 18 consecutive saves.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon allowed a homer to Paul Goldschmidt, one of the best hitters in the game, so we can give the Pirates closer a pass here. He remains one of the more consistent fantasy closers out there.

Pirates | Mark Melancon notches third save

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 14:38:39 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon picked up his third save of the year Monday, April 11, versus the Detroit Tigers. He worked a scoreless ninth inning, surrendering one hit and recording one strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: He doesn't throw as hard as most closers in baseball but Melancon just continues to get the job done. The 31-year-old saved 51 ballgames in 53 opportunities last season, and based on how he's soared out of the gate, it looks like he's in for another strong showing in 2016.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $9.65 million with the team Friday, Jan. 15.

Nationals | Nats looking at Mark Melancon

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 15:29:29 -0800

The Washington Nationals have talked to the Pittsburgh Pirates about RP Mark Melancon, but the talks are not serious, according to a source. The Nationals would have to make another trade of either RPs Jonathan Papelbon or Drew Storen before talks for Melancon could get serious.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon had a career year in 2016 and it will be hard for him to match that in 2016. That doesn't mean he won't be worth grabbing as one of the more coveted closer's in fantasy drafts, but beware of some regression in terms of ERA and WHIP.

Astros | Houston looking at Mark Melancon

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:27:52 -0800

The Houston Astros continue to search for closer on the trade market, and they are highly interested in Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon. Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen could be a fallback option.

Fantasy Tip: Regardless of where Melancon is closing in 2016, his fantasy price will be elevated thanks to his 51-save season in 2015 in which he had an ERA of 2.23 in 76 2/3 innings. That was likely Melancon's peak, so be careful not to overspend for him in a season in which it'll be hard to reproduce those numbers. However, if he's closing in either Pittsburgh or Houston, he should be able to give you a healthy number of saves.

Tigers | Detroit discussing Craig Kimbrel

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:54:18 -0800

The Detroit Tigers are one of about six teams apparently discussing a deal for San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel. Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates) is a name the Tigers are discussing, too. The Tigers could also look at trading for Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel had a down year in his first season in San Diego, but he remains an elite fantasy baseball closing option wherever he's pitching.
