The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired RP Ernesto Frieri from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for RP Jason Grilli.
Fantasy Tip: Frieri will likely slide in as Mark Melancon's setup man for now. However, he could prove to be a factor at some point this season. He should be picked up in NL-only leagues. If you're desperate for saves in mixed leagues, pick him up if you have space. However, Melancon has been relatively effective.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have removed RP Jason Grilli from the closer's role. RP Mark Melancon will see the bulk of the save opportunities now, and RP Tony Watson could also work the ninth inning on occasion.
Fantasy Tip: If Melancon is available in your leagues, snatch him up immediately. Watson is worth adding to your roster in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. It's unclear if Grilli has a shot to win the job back, so don't drop him just yet. In the meantime, you should considering benching him.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said the team will evaluate their closer situation after RP Jason Grilli blew another save Thursday, June 19.
Fantasy Tip: Mark Melancon would be the most likely candidate if the team decides to make a change at closer and should be a target for owners looking for saves in all leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli was reinstated as closer Thursday, May 29. He pitched the ninth inning for the save. Mark Melancon, who went 10-for-12 in Grilli's absence, will return to the chief setup role.
Fantasy Tip: This doesn't mean you should drop Melancon, except if you're in an extremely shallow mixed league. Grilli remains injury-prone, and even in setup duty, Melancon is valuable.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon has the longest streak in baseball with 85 innings without allowing a home run, dating back to last season.

Pittsburgh Pirates RPs Mark Melancon and Tony Watson will be held out of action Friday, May 23, meaning RP Bryan Morris will be the first option to close out the game in the ninth, if needed.
Fantasy Tip: Clint Hurdle said he will avoid using Jason Grilli (oblique) tonight after he was just activated from the DL.

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated RP Jason Grilli (oblique) from the disabled list Friday, May 23, and optioned C Tony Sanchez to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Mark Melancon owners shouldn't send him back to the waiver wire immediately. Grilli could be eased back into the closer's role, or Pittsburgh may continue on with Melancon, since he's done an admirable job filling in.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli (oblique) could be activated from the disabled list Saturday, May 24.
Fantasy Tip: It's possible the team could continue to use Mark Melancon in save chances until Grilli gets his feet wet with a couple of outings.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Jason Grilli (oblique) threw another simulated game Tuesday, May 20, and he'll be tested with another sim game Wednesday, May 21. The next step could be to be activated from the disabled list. "He feels fine. He feels healthy," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He threw all his pitches off the mound with intent. The challenge now will be for him to get out there back-to-back days and see how the fastball command shows up, how sharp the breaking ball is and those kind of things."
Fantasy Tip: Grilli is expected to return to the closer's role when he's ready to return, but don't rule out Mark Melancon staying in the role, either, to let Grilli be eased back in. Don't drop Melancon right away.
