Pirates | Mark Melancon bounces back

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 14:20:33 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon set down the side in order to record the save over the Chicago Cubs Thursday, April 23, after blowing the save and getting hit with the loss against the Cubs Tuesday, April 21. He struck out one while throwing seven of his 10 pitches for strikes, but his ERA stands at 7.36 on the year.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon's velocity was still down a bit Thursday, but he had better location and movement on his pitches in the save. Don't panic just yet with him, but continue to monitor the situation. Should he continue to falter, Tony Watson may be in the slight lead for save opps, but this could easily become a committee approach including Jared Hughes and Arquimedes Caminero.

Pirates | Mark Melancon not available

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 14:36:54 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon is not available to close Wednesday, April 22, but manager Clint Hurdle said Melancon will remain in the closer role for now.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon's velocity was down, and he blew the save and was hit with the loss against the Chicago Cubs last night. Sit tight if you are a Melancon owner, and don't make any rash decisions, as the Pirates are sticking with him through his struggles. Those in deep NL-only leagues searching for saves could speculate on Tony Watson or Arquimedes Caminero, in that order.

Pirates | Mark Melancon not injured

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 11:44:32 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon's velocity has been down recently, but manager Clint Hurdle said his closer is not injured.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon was charged with a blown save and loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs. He's sporting an 8.53 ERA in just 6 1/3 innings to start 2015. Don't panic just yet if you own Melancon, but NL-only owners searching for saves may want to take a look at Tony Watson or Arquimedes Caminero as speculation in case Melancon continues to stumble.

Pirates | Mark Melancon's velocity down

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 20:29:05 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon had his cutter bottom out at 86 mph Tuesday, April 21, against the Chicago Cubs, and he was at 87-88 mph in his appearance Saturday, April 18. Last season that same pitch average 91.6 mph.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon's velocity is down, and that is trouble for fantasy owners in standard formats. Monitor the situation closely, as it is possible he could have some sort of injury.

Pirates | Mark Melancon's velocity down

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 08:22:37 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon has averaged 88.7 mph on his fastball through three innings thus far. His average fastball was 91.6 mph last season. Manager Clint Hurdle said he's not worried, but the situation will be monitored.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon has only had one rough outing in which he allowed three runs and four hits in one inning. He still has three strikeouts in as many innings. There isn't a lot of cause for concern unless the velocity dip lingers.

Pirates | Ernesto Frieri acquired

Fri, 27 Jun 2014 15:22:28 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired RP Ernesto Frieri from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for RP Jason Grilli.

Fantasy Tip: Frieri will likely slide in as Mark Melancon's setup man for now. However, he could prove to be a factor at some point this season. He should be picked up in NL-only leagues. If you're desperate for saves in mixed leagues, pick him up if you have space. However, Melancon has been relatively effective.

Pirates | Jason Grilli removed from closer's role

Fri, 20 Jun 2014 10:52:54 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates have removed RP Jason Grilli from the closer's role. RP Mark Melancon will see the bulk of the save opportunities now, and RP Tony Watson could also work the ninth inning on occasion.

Fantasy Tip: If Melancon is available in your leagues, snatch him up immediately. Watson is worth adding to your roster in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. It's unclear if Grilli has a shot to win the job back, so don't drop him just yet. In the meantime, you should considering benching him.

Pirates | Will evaluate closer situation

Thu, 19 Jun 2014 17:11:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said the team will evaluate their closer situation after RP Jason Grilli blew another save Thursday, June 19.

Fantasy Tip: Mark Melancon would be the most likely candidate if the team decides to make a change at closer and should be a target for owners looking for saves in all leagues.
