Red Sox | Bobby Valentine confident in relievers

Mon, 09 Apr 2012 15:35:45 -0700

Updating a previous item, Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine seemed confident about the outlook for RPs Alfredo Aceves and Mark Melancon after the duo combined to blow another save against the Detroit Tigers Sunday, April 8. "I just have to get the right guys matched up. Give me a little more time and I think I'll be able to do that. There's a lot of information. Trying to get all the information in there. These guys are good players and I think we have good arms out there that will do the job and I think we have good starters who are going to last longer in the game, too. This has been three days of something other than what it's going to be like for this season. I believe," Valentine said. For now, SP Daniel Bard remains in the starting rotation.

Red Sox | Mark Melancon to remain as setup man

Wed, 04 Apr 2012 11:37:28 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Mark Melancon will remain as the primary eighth-inning setup man with RP Andrew Bailey (thumb) out for an extended period of time. RP Alfredo Aceves will see duties in the ninth inning. "(Aceves) loves competition," skipper Bobby Valentine said. "I think he's one of the better competitors that I've seen. I could be wrong. I haven't seen him up close and personal in battle, but I believe that he's a very good competitor, to say nothing of a very good pitcher." Valentine will consider using Aceves for two-inning saves, and his familiarity with the American League gave him an advantage over Melancon.
