Bernie Wilson reports for the Associated Press San Diego Chargers backup QB Dave Dickenson hit rookie DeRonnie Pitts with a 3-yard TD pass with 39 seconds left, then hit Patrick Batteaux with the 2-point conversion pass to give the Chargers a win on Saturday night. Starting QB Doug Flutie threw a 7-yard pass to WR Curtis Conway. RB Ronney Jenkins scored on a 29-yard run. For the 49ers starting QB Jeff Garcia threw a 16-yard TD pass to rookie WR Cedrick Wilson. RB Terry Jackson had 12-yard run for a TD and WR Dwight Carter had a TD catch. RB Garrison Hearst started and finished with 9 yards on 5 carries. He caught one pass for 15 yards.

According to their official site, the running back position for the San Francisco 49ers is a wide-open situation. Fullback is more settled with Fred Beasley and Terry Jackson. "We need to resolve our situation at running back - no doubt about it," said coach Steve Mariucci. He listed the possibilites for the starter's job as Garrison Hearst (injured), Paul Smith (inexperienced), Charlie Garner (unsigned) or someone they select in the NFL Draft. At top of the depth chart, as of today, could be Paul Smith. "Paul will just get better with work," said RBs coach Tom Rathman. Hearst's status is still unknown, but everyone is pulling for his comeback. Also on the roster is is second-year player Jonas Lewis.

ESPN is reporting RB Garrison Hearst is going to miss at least the first few weeks of the upcoming season ... but speculation continues that he may miss a lot more action than that. However, Hearst's agent, Pat Dye Jr., spoke with SportsTicker and stated to them that it's too early to call the injury career-threatening and that Hearst is feeling fine. Currently, fifth-round pick Terry Jackson and Chuck Levy are the only healthy options the 49ers have at RB.

The Sacramento Bee reports there is still a chance that in addition to Garrison Hearst, RB Travis Jervey may miss the start of training camp as well. Look for Chuck Levy and rookie Terry Jackson to see the bulk of the carries in the team's minicamps.
