Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers are still awaiting official word from DL Bryant Young on his plans for next season. Young is believed to be contemplating a return for another season. Young, who is expected to have a reduced role next season, would likely have to play at a reduced salary in 2007, as he has earned $4.25 million or more in each of the past six seasons. "I got a positive read after the season that he was excited about coming back," head coach Mike Nolan said. "Now his role would have to change and he understands that. It would've been different this past year, but we had no depth. It was difficult. He takes more reps than I would like for him to take right now, but that's the best we got."

Young said he is not thinking about 2007 and beyond, but the team would like to have him back if Young is willing to play another season. "There have been discussions from the standpoint of what he wants to do and what we'd like to do," said 49ers vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan. "We'd love to have him around. As long as he keeps showing he can play and help us win games, he's a huge asset."
